Spinning for Weight Loss: Why I Don’t Approve of It

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

By Craig Ballantyne Had an email yesterday from a reader asking what I thought about spinning. Well, the truth is, I’m not a big fan of the spinning scene. I know there are better ways to lose fat and spend your workout time. First of all, spinning classes are not efficient. I know that you can get more work done in less time if you do intervals on your own. And so, because it is not efficient, it could also be a lot more effective. Second, the high RPM “spinning” is pointless. That’s not doing anything for fat loss. And I’ve talked to more than one woman that complained about her hips being sore after spinning at 150 RPM in a class. Why is the high RPM spinning ineffective? Because the amount of mechanical work performed is lower than when you have higher tension and pedal at a slower rate (i.e. 80 RPM). So cut the high RPM spinning out, and just do the high tension intervals. You’ll save time and get the same or better results. The high-tension, low/moderate RPM intervals are the only part of the spinning class worth doing. More tension = more turbulence = more fat loss results. It’s a very simple equation. But again, you can do those high-tension intervals on your own in less than half the time of a regular spinning class. Regular spinning class = about 45 minutes Advanced structured intervals workout = About 20 minutes Time saved = 25 minutes - Which is more than enough time to get some strength training supersets in to build muscle and really crank up your metabolism. Now that’s a better, more well rounded workout that will help you make bigger improvements to your body. A combination of strength and interval training is the clear winner- accomplishing more (muscle building and fat loss) than any type of spinning class, aerobics class, or circuit training workout. Now if some people need the whole class environment as a motivation to workout, fine. Or if that’s one of your fun workouts per week, then go for it. You can keep going to spinning if you like it. But if you think that spinning classes are the most efficient answer to your fat loss goals, forget about it. When you need to get fat loss results in less time, the combination strength and intervals are more efficeint and effective. Workouts specifically structured for fat loss, such as the strength and interval workouts, are far more effective than random spinning sessions. Design the best fat loss program for you and your time limits. Fast Food Weight Loss - Is Eating At McDonald’s The New Path To Weight Loss?

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

By Tracie Johanson Is eating at McDonalds the new path to weight loss? Can fast food burgers, fries and sodas fit into your diet and weight loss program? For years, the answer has been a resounding NO. But lately, Wendys, Burger King and many other fast food chains have made changes to help consumers stick to a healthy diet. Why have fast food companies finally started to pay attention to healthier food choices? Simply stated, because its good for business. Americans are trying everything from the newest weight loss pill to Weight Watchers to lose their extra fat, spending ..more than $40 billion in 2004 on weight control pills, gym memberships, diet plans and related foods, estimates Marketdata Enterprises, which studies the weight loss industry (Source: cnn.com; 1-14-2005). Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that 80 percent of overweight individuals and almost 87 percent of obese individuals are trying to lose or maintain their weight. Any fast foods company thats paying attention to public sentiment and trends has made changes to make their menu more palatable to the health and fitness enthusiast. McDonalds, long an industry leader, has made tremendous strides in this area culminating in their recent announcement that all fast food packaging will soon include nutritional information. But have they gone far enough? -> Fast Food = Fat Food: No matter how many healthy new products are introduced onto the fast food menu boards, the problem is that their core products are high in fat and calories. Consider these typical meals from McDonalds: * Big Mac, Large Fries, Large Coca-Cola, Hot Fudge Sundae =1,730 calories, 99% of daily fat, 108% of daily saturated fat, 86% of daily carbohydrates * Chicken Selects Breast Strips (5 pc), Large Fries, Large Coke, McFlurry with M+Ms Candies (12 oz.) =2,290 calories, 151% of daily fat, 131% of daily saturated fat, 100% of daily carbohydrates * Bacon Ranch Salad/Crispy Chicken, Newmans Ranch Dressing, Large Coke, McFlurry Oreo (12 oz.) =1,390 calories, 73% of daily fat, 81% of daily saturated fat, 69% of daily carbohydrates (Source: mcdonalds.com) Some consumers, in an attempt to reduce the number of calories and fat theyre eating, have opted for salads instead of traditional burgers and fries. Unfortunately, some fast food salads are almost as bad for us as a Big Mac. A California Cobb salad with Newmans Own Cobb Dressing from McDonalds, for example, boasts 490 calories and 42% of your daily fat. Compare that to a Big Mac, which has 560 calories and 47% of your recommended daily fat. Although chastised in the movie SuperSize Me, McDonalds isnt alone in offering high calories foods. The Original Whopper with Cheese from Burger King will cost you 800 calories and 49 grams of fat. Make that a Double Whopper with Cheese and youll consume an incredible 1,060 calories and 69 grams of fat. The Big Bacon Classic from Wendys is better with 580 calories and 29 grams of fat, while the Bacon Ultimate Cheeseburger from Jack In The Box is the highest on the list with 1,094 calories and a tremendous 78 grams of fat. Clearly, high calorie fast food has become a problem. With approximately 65% of Americans classified as overweight, people are pointing fingers of blame. In a lawsuit filed in 2002, two Bronx teenagers accused McDonald’s of making them fat by serving them highly processed food that affected their health. A judge tossed out the case a year later, but an appeals court reinstated part of the suit earlier this year, according to published reports. (Source: cnn.com; 10-20-2005). McDonalds isnt the only chain being accused of making people fat. A New York City lawyer has filed suit against the four big fast-food corporations, saying their fatty foods are responsible for his clients obesity and related health problems. Samuel Hirsch filed his lawsuit Wednesday at a New York state court in the Bronx, alleging that McDonalds, Burger King, Wendys and KFC Corporation are irresponsible and deceptive in the posting of their nutritional information, that they need to offer healthier options on their menus, and that they create a de facto addiction in their consumers (Source: foxnews.com; 7-24-2002). The fast food industry initially responded by arguing that customers have a choice of what to order when going to a restaurant. “It’s senseless, baseless and ridiculous,” National Restaurant Association spokeswoman Katharine Kim said. “There are choices in restaurants and people can make these choices, and there’s a little personal responsibility as well.” (Source: foxnews.com; 7-24-2002). Our elected officials seem to agree with that assessment. The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill Wednesday that would block lawsuits by people who blame fast-food chains for their obesity. The cheeseburger bill, as it has been dubbed in Congress, stems from class-action litigation that accused McDonald’s of causing obesity in children (Source: cnn.com; 10-20-2005). This bill is not yet law, having passed the House but not yet the Senate. In the last Congress a similar bill passed the House, but the Senate never acted on it. About 20 states have laws similar to the cheeseburger bill. -> Fast Food Makes A Change: To their credit, McDonalds and some others in the fast food industry have made changes to their menu making it easier for us to stick to our diet program or weight loss plan. McDonalds allows consumers to substitute Apple Dippers with Caramel Dip for the french fries in their meal, cutting calories from 350 to 100 and reducing fat from 16 grams all the way down to 1 gram (comparison vs. medium fries). McDonalds also allows a no-cost substitution of 1% milk instead of a Coke, further cutting caloric intake by 50 calories and boosting protein and calcium (comparison vs. small Coke Classic). Upon request, Burger King now provides Motts Strawberry Flavored Applesauce in place of french fries which will save you 270 calories and 18 grams of fat (comparison vs. medium fries). Wendys will honor customer requests to substitute mandarin oranges for french fries, sparing you a belt-busting 360 calories and 21 grams of fat (comparison vs. medium fries). Not only are the fast food giants allowing healthier substitutions, but they have also added a selection of fairly nutritious menu options. McDonalds new Fruit & Walnut Salad has only 310 calories and 13 grams of fat, while their Fruit & Yogurt Parfait boasts 160 calories and 2 grams of fat. In some markets Burger King is offering a Veggie Burger that has only 340 calories and 8 grams of fat when you order it without the mayonnaise. Now McDonalds has given consumers looking for fast weight loss another tool: easy to read and easy to find nutritional labels. In the past, customers wanting to find nutrition facts on their fast food choices either had to search in the restaurant for a hard-to-find poster or go online. Now, in what is being called a bold move, McDonalds is planning to put these nutritional facts right where theyre easiest to find on the product wrapper itself. McDonald’s Corp. customers will soon know that the Big Mac they bought contains almost half their recommended daily fat intake just by looking at the wrapper. In its latest measure to fend off critics that blame the world’s largest restaurant company for contributing to rising incidents of obesity and other health problems, McDonald’s said it will start printing nutritional information on the packaging of its food (Source: cnn.com; 10-26-2005). McDonalds is to be commended for their efforts to educate their customers. This new informative label goes a long way towards answering nutritional concerns. Expected to be in most stores by the end of 2006, the new labels will include the amount of the nutrient (calories, fat, protein, etc.) and the percentage of the daily recommended intake, based on a 2,000 calorie diet. -> Is It Enough? The fast food industry has heard the public asking for healthier options and more nutritional information, and they have responded. But it is enough? McDonalds and others still sell high calorie and high fat products, and we shouldnt expect those to disappear anytime soon. In our free market, as long as there is a demand there will be someone with a supply. Data from USDAs food intake surveys show that the food-away-from-home sector provided 32 percent of total food energy consumption in 1994-96, up from 18 percent in 1977-78. The data also suggest that, when eating out, people either eat more or eat higher calorie foodsor bothand that this tendency appears to be increasing (Source: usda.gov). Even with more information at their fingertips, there is some doubt that consumers will actually use that information to make healthier choices. Consider the limited impact from warning labels on cigarettes and alcohol packaging; despite such dire warnings, people still use these products. There is evidence that Americans will continue to eat what they want, no matter how much information they have available to them. According to a 2000 Roper Reports survey of a nationally representative sample of 2,000 Americans 18 or older, the percentage of Americans who say they are eating “pretty much whatever they want” was at an all-time high of 70 percent in 2000, up from 58 percent in 1997 (Source: usda.gov). The question of is it enough seems to be misdirected. Instead of asking the fast food industry to do more to educate the public and offer healthy options, perhaps what we as a country should do is ask ourselves if the information we have right now is enough. If we look for it, is there enough health, fitness and nutritional information out there to help us make the right dietary choices? As uncomfortable as it may be for some, the answer to this question is probably yes. -> The Overlooked Answer: All too often, when participating in a discussion of diet and weight control, we fail to mention the most obvious answer: exercise! Consistent exercise can balance out and make up for the occasional high calorie fast food meal, while at the same time providing countless other health benefits. Exercise is the only path to quick weight loss that virtually every doctor in the world agrees upon. Exercise is safe, effective, and brings many more benefits to our lives than nutrition labels ever will alone. Exercise is fun, invigorating, motivating and the single most powerful way to improve our life and well-being. Reaching your ideal weight via a healthy and active lifestyle has been found to lower health risks and medical problems in 90 percent of overweight patients. In addition to the exercise benefits listed above, fit people are eight times less likely to die from cancer than the unfit, and 53 percent less likely to die from other diseases. Fit people are also eight times less likely to die from heart disease. Yes, nutrition labels are important insofar as we actually use them. But without a doubt, regular exercise is the most important piece of the puzzle and the best way to achieve rapid weight loss. Exercise is the safest way to achieve permanent fat loss, and when combined with a sound diet and nutrition program the body is turned into a virtual fat-burning furnace! Consumers would be wise to use the new tools from the fast food industry. Order the healthier items off the menu, pay attention to the nutritional labels, and above all else remember to participate in regular exercise. The Gratitude Wreath

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By Rondi Hillstrom Davis Bring a little bit of autumn indoors. Family and friends help create this wreath by sharing what they are thankful for on brightly colored leaves. Every member of the family can contribute to this beautiful wreath. This is a great, concrete, visual way to put meaning back in the holidays for children. Materials: 18-inch diameter straw wreath Fall leaves 1 or 2 metallic paint pens 3 1/2-yards of 1/4-inch elastic 1 straight pin Directions 1. Fill a large grocery sack with sturdy fall leaves. 2. As a base, use an 18-inch diameter straw wreath. 3. Wrap the wreath with the elastic. Start by securing one end of the elastic to the top of the wreath with a long straight pin. Wrap the elastic around the wreath at 3-inch intervals. The elastic should be snug against the straw, but not too tight. Once you have gone all the way around the wreath, tie the ends of the elastic together. 4. Using a paint pen on the leaves, have each member of the family write down what they are most thankful for. 5. Starting at the top and working clockwise, tuck the stems of two or three leaves into each band of elastic. Try to arrange the leaves so that no elastic or straw shows. This wreath should take about 15 minutes to construct. Hang the finished wreath on the front door and celebrate all of your family’s blessings. We leave a basket of leaves near the door, and on Thanksgiving Day, all of our guests add their blessings to our wreath. — You have permission to reprint this article electronically or in print, free of charge, provided that each article is: Printed in its full form with no changes Includes an active link A courtesy copy of your publication is sent to the above contact And the following byline appears at the bottom of each article: About The Author Rondi Hillstrom Davis and Janell Sewall Oakes are the co-authors of the award-winning book Together: Creating Family Traditions. Home Remedies for Nausea - Chinese Style

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By Matthew Scott These home remedies for nausea are based on simple, traditional Chinese ways to relieve and prevent this common and uncomfortable symptom. Several remedies use ginger for its ability to harmonize and settle the stomach. These particular ginger remedies for nausea can therefore also be used in cases where vomiting occurs as well. Note though that ginger has a warming effect on the body, so if you feel uncomfortably hot or flushed or perhaps have a headache after taking it via one of these remedies for nausea, reduce the amount of ginger next time, or try a non-ginger remedy. Home Remedies for Nausea Remedy 1. Ginger Milk: Boil 250ml of fresh, whole milk, 25ml of ginger juice (made from crushing fresh ginger) and 25g of brown sugar for 10 minutes. Sip slowly while it’s still hot. Remedy 2. Ginger Water: Put 3 slices of fresh ginger in a cup, add boiling water, and brown sugar to taste. Drink warm. Leave the ginger in the cup and top it up with more water 1 or 2 times throughout the day if necessary. Remedy 3. Ginger Tea: Put 3 slices of fresh ginger and 2-3 grams of black tea (or a tea bag) in a cup. Add boilingwater, then let it steep for several minutes. Drink warm. As above, leave the ingredients in the cup and top it up throughout the dayif necessary. Remedy 4. Pu Er Tea: From Yunnan province in China, and widely available, this tea is highly regarded for its beneficial effects ondigestion. It may be used in cases of nausea, vomiting and even obesity. Put 5 or 6 grams in a cup, add boiling water, then let it steep for several minutes. Drink it warm. Re-use it throughout the day, as above. Remedy 5. Orange Peel: Perhaps the simplest of all these home remedies for nausea, but not necessarily the least effective. Peel an orange and bruise the skin by twisting and crushing it with your fingers. Hold the skin to your nose and sniff the scent. Remedy 6. Acupressure: Applying thumb pressure to a specific point on your wrists makes for another very simple, yet highly effective remedy for nausea. This point is well known by Chinese medicine practitioners for its ability to relieve anxiety, stress, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms. For full illustrated instructions on locating and pressing the point (referred to as Point 1), see: http://chinese-holistic-health-exercises.com/reflexology-for-anxiety.html For greater effectiveness it is recommended that you combine some of the above home remedies for nausea. For instance, choose one ginger remedy and take it once or twice a day, plus do the acupressure several times a day. Note also that if you’re pregnant and suffering from morning sickness, ginger is one of the most common and safest Chinese home remedies for nausea and vomiting. Check with your health professional first though if you’re unsure about this. Matthew Scott is a professionally trained Chinese medicine practitioner from Australia, living in China since 2000. Home Equity Loan Versus Business Loan

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Maria_Ny]Maria Ny Money is essential for all businesses to start up, operate and expand. The Small Business Administration (SBA) states that while poor management is cited most frequently as the reason businesses fail, inadequate or ill-timed financing is a close second. They go on to say that when looking for money, you must consider your company’s debt-to-equity ratio–the relation between dollars you’ve borrowed and dollars you’ve invested in your business. The more money owners have invested in their business, the easier it is to attract financing. Ideally, it’s best to start your business on money you have in savings or otherwise liquid. But, like most people, you probably don’t have that much money available and you’ll need a loan. About the only way a startup business can get a bank loan is through one of the loan programs offered by the SBA, a federal agency that doesn’t actually loan money directly, but rather guarantees the payback of a certain percentage to banks. Thus, you must prove your creditworthiness with the bank, which requires excellent credit. And, you must meet the complex SBA eligibility criteria. Home equity loans (second mortgages) are cost-effective ways of getting startup capital because they generally offer lower interest rates, the choice of a fixed mortgage rate or an adjustable rate mortgage (ARM) and shorter repayment terms and lower payments than other business loans. Unlike business loans, it is easy to qualify for a home equity loan, even if your credit is not perfect. Even if you already have a second mortgage, you may want to cash out on equity through mortgage refinancing because many times, the attractive rates and flexibility of second mortgages make more sense than to refinance your first mortgage, especially if your first mortgage rates are good. Cash Advance - One of the Quickest Way to Get Hold of Money

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Wain Roy One of the most crucial commercial financing needs for any business is assuring that short-term cash necessity are successfully met. This is frequently a challenging task. Even prospering small businesses often need more cash than they can borrow from a bank. The use of a feasible business cash advance scheme has become a progressively important commercial financing process for many businesses faced with a prospective short-term cash deficit. If you find yourself in the same class with a need for cash but with no other option then the best choice for you would be that of unsecured cash advance. Cash advance are just like any other unsecured loans where you need not to deposit anything as security for the loaned amount. It is an unsecured loan that gets matures on your next pay date. Receiving cash through instant cash advance simply takes few hours. A cash advance is designed to accomplish your short-term financial requirements and should not be used as a regular lending option. The loans are normally for short-term in that you are expected to return back in two to three weeks. Cash advance are loans that are given who are in need for cash either for a short term or long term demand. Bad credit cash advance services satisfy the requirements of people who need fast emergency cash but their bad credit history indispose them for getting a loan. Bad credit should not halt you from applying for a payday or cash advance loan. There will be no credit check apart from the verification of the information you supply. Applying and getting approved is quick and convenient. Online lenders can approve you application quickly and you’ll have the cash you need as soon as the very day you are approved. Interest rates of cash advance loan vary from company to company. Some lenders offer fewer rates for new or old customers. After providing the cash advance loan company with the required information, normally your name, address, employment and banking information, you can be approved in as little as one hour and the funds can often be in your checking account the very same day. Bad credit cash advance services are generally very fast. Bad credit fast cash loan is a short-term answer to your urgent cash need and you have to pay it back on or before your next payday. If you dont make repayment before the next payday, the lenders will enforce penalties and the rate of interest will increase. A cash advance can be acquired online and with no credit check. Bad credit will not disqualify you from qualifying for a payday loan. The Internet provides chance to find help. Many websites and online lenders exist to provide service to individuals in a situation where a bad credit cash advance is essential. You can get instant approval by simply filling up the application form. Some lenders do not even require you to deposit any paperwork. Internet is a nice medium and a wonderful way to find lenders that offer business cash advance, but can sometimes lead to companies that are not legitimate. History of Previous European Currency Unions

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

By Sam Vaknin The Euro feels like a novelty - but it is not. It was preceded by quite a few Monetary Unions in Europe and outside it. To start with, countries such as the USA and the USSR are (or were in the latter’s case) monetary unions. A single currency was or is used over enormous land masses incorporating previously distinct political, social and economic entities. The American constitution, for instance, did not provide for the existence of a central bank. Founding fathers, the likes of Madison and Jefferson, objected to its existence. A central monetary institution was established only in 1791 (modelled after the Bank of England). But Madison (as President) let its concession expire in 1811. It was revived in 1816 - only to die again. It took a civil war to lead to a budding monetary union. Bank regulation and supervision were instituted only in 1863 and a distinction was made between national and state-level banks. By that time, 1562 private banks were printing and issuing notes, some of them not a legal tender. In 1800 there were only 25. The same thing happened in the principalities which were later to constitute Germany: 25 private banks were established only between 1847 and 1857 with the express intention of printing banknotes to circulate as legal tender. In 1816 - 70 different types of currency (mostly foreign) were being used in the Rhineland alone. A tidal wave of banking crises in 1908 led to the formation of the Federal Reserve System and 52 years were to elapse until the full monopoly of money issuance was retained by it. What is a monetary union? Is it sufficient to have a single currency with free and guaranteed convertibility? Two additional conditions apply: that the exchange rate be effective (realistic and, thus, not susceptible to speculative attacks) and that the members of the union adhere to one monetary policy. Actually, history shows that the condition of a single currency, though preferable, is not a sine qua non. A union could incorporate several currencies, fully and permanently convertible into one another at irrevocably fixed exchange rates which is really like having a single currency with various denominations, each printed by another member of the Union. What seems to be more important is the relationship (as expressed through the exchange rate) between the Union and other economic players. The currency of the Union must be convertible to other currencies at a given (could be fluctuating - but always one) exchange rate determined by a uniform exchange rate policy. This must apply all over the territory of the single currency - otherwise, arbitrageurs will buy it in one place and sell it in another and exchange controls would have to be imposed, eliminating free convertibility and inducing panic. This is not a theoretical - and thus unnecessary - debate. ALL monetary unions in the past failed because they allowed their currency or currencies to to be exchanged (against outside currencies) at varying rates, depending on where it was converted (in which part of the monetary union). Before long, all Europe, save England, will have one money. This was written by William Bagehot, the Editor of The Economist, the renowned British magazine. Yet, it was written 120 years ago when Britain, even then, was debating whether to adopt a single European Currency. Joining a monetary union means giving up independent monetary policy and, with it, a sizeable slice of national sovereignty. The member country can no longer control its the money supply, its inflation or interest rates, or its foreign exchange rates. Monetary policy is transferred to a central monetary authority (European Central Bank). A common currency is a transmission mechanism of economic signals (information) and expectations, often through the monetary policy. In a monetary union, fiscal profligacy of a few members, for example, often leads to the need to raise interest rates in order to pre-empt inflationary pressures. This need arises precisely because these countries share a common currency. In other words, the effects of one member’s fiscal decisions are communicated to other members (through the monetary policy) because they share one currency. The currency is the medium of exchange of information regarding the present and future health of the economies involved. Monetary unions which did not follow this course are no longer with us. Monetary unions, as we said, are no novelty. People felt the need to create a uniform medium of exchange as early as the times of Ancient Greece and Medieval Europe. However, those early monetary unions did not bear the hallmarks of modern day unions: they did not have a central monetary authority or monetary policy, for instance. The first truly modern example would be the monetary union of Colonial New England. The New England colonies (Connecticut, Massachusetts Bay, New Hampshire and Rhode Island) accepted each others paper money as legal tender until 1750. These notes were even accepted as tax payments by the governments of the colonies. Massachusetts was a dominant economy and sustained this arrangement for almost a century. It was envy that ended this very successful arrangement: the other colonies began to print their own notes outside the realm of the union. Massachusetts bought back (redeemed) all its paper money in 1751, paying for it in silver. It instituted a mono-metalic (silver) standard and ceased to accept the paper money of the other three colonies. The second, more important, experiment was the Latin Monetary Union. It was a purely French contraption, intended to further, cement, and augment its political prowess and monetary clout. Belgium adopted the French Franc when it attained independence in 1830. It was only natural that France and Belgium (together with Switzerland) should encourage others to join them in 1848. Italy followed in 1861 and the last ones were Greece and Bulgaria (!) in 1867. Together they formed the bimetallic currency union known as the Latin Monetary Union (LMU). The LMU seriously flirted with Austria and Spain. The Foundation Treaty was officially signed only on 23/12/1865 in Paris. The rules of this Union were somewhat peculiar and, in some respects, seemed to defy conventional economic wisdom. Unofficially, the French influence extended to 18 countries which adopted the Gold Franc as their monetary basis. Four of them agreed on a gold to silver conversion rate and minted gold coins which were legal tender in all of them. They voluntarily accepted a money supply limitation which forbade them to print more than 6 Franc coins per capita (the four were: France, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland). Officially (and really) a gold standard developed throughout Europe and included coin issuers such as Germany and the United Kingdom). Still, in the Latin Monetary Union, the quantities of gold and silver Union coins that member countries could mint was unlimited. Regardless of the quantities minted, the coins were legal tender across the Union. Smaller denomination (token) silver coins, minted in limited quantity, were legal tender only in the issuing country. There was no single currency like the Euro. Countries maintained their national currencies (coins), but these were at parity with each other. An exchange commission of 1.25 % was charged to convert them. The tokens had a lower silver content than the Union coins. Governmental and municipal offices were required to accept up to 100 Francs of tokens (even though they were not convertible and had a lower intrinsic value) in a single transaction. This loophole led to mass arbitrage: converting low metal content coins to buy high metal content ones. The Union had no money supply policy or management. It was left to the market to determine how much money will be in circulation. The central banks pledged the free conversion of gold and silver to coins. But, this pledge meant that the Central Banks of the participating countries were forced to maintain a fixed ratio of exchange between the two metals (15 to 1, at the time) ignoring the prices fixed daily in the world markets. The LMU was too negligible to influence the world prices of these two metals. The result was overvalued silver, export of silver from one member to another using ingenious and ever more devious ways of circumventing the rules of the Union. There was no choice but to suspend silver convertibility and thus acknowledge a de facto gold standard. Silver coins and tokens remained legal tender. This became a major problem for the Union and the coup de grace was delivered by the unprecedented financing needs brought on by the First World War. The LMU was officially dismantled in 1926 - but died long before that. The lesson: a common currency is not enough - a common monetary policy monitored and enforced by a common Central Bank is required in order to sustain a monetary union. As the LMU was being formed, in 1867, an International Monetary Conference was convened. Twenty countries participated and discussed the introduction of a global currency. They decided to adopt the gold (British, USA) standard and to allow for a transition period. They agreed to use three major hard currencies but to equate their gold content so as to render them completely interchangeable. Nothing came out of it - but this plan was a lot more sensible than the LMU. One wrong path seemed to have been the Scandinavian Monetary Union. Sweden (1873), Denmark (1873) and Norway (1875) formed the Scandinavian Monetary Union (SMU). The pattern was familiar: they accepted each others gold coins as legal tender in their territories. Token coins were also cross-boundary legal tender as were banknotes (1900) recognized by the banks of the member countries. It worked so perfectly that no one wanted to convert the currencies and exchange rates were not available from 1905 to 1924, when Sweden dismantled the Union following Norway’s independence. Actually, the countries involved created (though not officially) what amounted to a unified central bank with unified reserves - which extended monetary credit lines to each of the member countries. The Scandinavian Kronor held well as long as gold supply was limited. World War I changed this situation as governments dumped gold and inflated their currencies, engaging in competitive devaluations. Central Banks used the depreciated currencies to buy gold at official (cheap) rates. Sweden saw through this ploy and refused to sell its gold in the officially fixed price. The other members began to sell large quantities of the token coins to Sweden and use the proceeds to buy the much Stronger Swedish economy (=currency) at an ever cheaper price (as the price of gold collapsed). Sweden reacted by prohibiting the import of other members tokens. Without a fixed price of gold and without coin convertibility, there was no Union to talk of. The last big (and recent) experiment in monetary union was the East African Currency Area. An equivalent experiment is still going on in the Francophile part of Africa involving the CFA currency. The parts of East Africa ruled by the British (Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika and, in 1936, Zanzibar) adopted in 1922 a single common currency, the East African shilling. Independence in East Africa had no monetary aspect because it remained part of the Sterling Area. This guaranteed the convertibility of the local currencies into British Pounds. Regarding this a matter of national pride (and strategic importance) the British poured inordinate amounts of money into these emerging economies. This monetary union was not disturbed by the introduction (1966) of local currencies in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The three currencies were legal tender in each of these countries and were all convertible to Pounds. It was the Pound which gave way by strongly depreciating in the late 60s and early 70s. The Sterling Area was dismantled in 1972 and with it the strict monetary discipline which it imposed - explicitly and through the free convertibility - on its members. A divergence in the value of the currencies (due to different inflation targets and resulting interest rates) was inevitable. In 1977 the East African Currency Area ended. Not all monetary unions met the same gloomy end, however. Arguably, the most famous of the successful ones is the Zollverein (German Customs Union). At the beginning of the 19th century, there were 39 independent political units which made up the German Federation in what is today’s Germany. They all minted coins (gold, silver) and had their own standards for weights and measures. Labour mobility in Europe was greatly enhanced by the decisions of the Congress of Vienna in 1815 but trade was still ineffective because of the number of different currencies. The German statelets formed a customs union as early as 1818. This was followed by the formation of three regional groupings (the Northern, Central and Southern) which were united in 1833. In 1828, Prussia harmonized and unified its tariffs with the other members of the Federation. Debts related to customs could be paid in gold or silver. Several currencies were developed and linked to each other through fixed exchange rates. There was an over-riding single currency: the Vereinsmunze. The Zollverein (Customs Union) was established in 1834 to facilitate trade and reduce its costs. Most of the political units agreed to choose between one of two monetary standards (the Thaler and the Gulden) in 1838 and nine years later, the central bank of Prussia (which comprised 70% of the population and land mass of the future Germany) became the effective Central Bank of the Federation. The North German Thaler was fixed at 1.75 to the South German Gulden and, in 1856 (when Austria became associated with the Union), at 1.5 Austrian Florins (this was to be a short lived affair, because Prussia and Austria declared war on each other in 1866). Germany was united by Bismarck in 1871 and a Reichsbank was founded 4 years later. It issued the Reichsmark which became the legal and only tender of the whole German Reich. The currency Union survived two world wars, a devastating bout of inflation in 1923 and a collapse of the currency after the Second World War. The Reichsmark became the solid and reliable Bundesbank. The Union still survives in the Deutschmark. This is the only case of a monetary union which succeeded without being preceded by a political arrangement. It survived because Prussia was sizeable and had enough real power and perceived clout to enforce compliance on the other members of the Federation. Prussia wanted to have a stable currency and introduced consistent metallic standards. The other states could not deprive their currencies of their intrinsic values. For the first time in history, coinage became a professional economic decision, totally depoliticized. In this context, we must mention another successful (on-going) union - the CFA Franc Zone. The CFA (French African Community) is a currency used in the former French colonies of West and Central Africa (and, curiously, in one formerly Spanish colony). The currency zone has been in existence for well over three decades and comprises diverse ethnic, lingual, cultural, political and economic units. The currency withstood devaluations (the latest one of 100% vis a vis the French Franc), changes of regimes (from colonial to independent), the existence of two groups of members, each with its own central bank, controls of trade and capital flows - not to mention a host of natural and man made catastrophes. What makes it so successful is maybe the fact that the reserves of the member states are hoarded in the safes of the French Central Bank and that the currency is almost absolutely convertible to the French Franc. Convertibility is guaranteed by the French Treasury itself. France imposes monetary discipline (that it sometimes lacks at home!) directly and through its generous financial assistance. Europe has had more than its share of botched (the Snake, the EMS, the ERM) and of successful (ECU, the United Kingdom and Ireland) currency unifications. A neglected one is between Belgium and Luxembourg (BENELUX is the political alignment which includes the Netherlands). There is no real currency union here. Both maintain separate currencies. But their currencies are at parity and serve as legal tender in both countries since 1921. The Belgian Central Bank controls the monetary policies of both countries, with the exception of exchange regulations which are overseen by a joint agency. In both 1982 and 1993 the two countries considered dismantling the union - but this was not serious talk, the advantages being so numerous (especially to the smaller partner). These three currency unions have all survived due mainly to the fact that one monetary authority has been responsible, at least de facto, for managing the currency. What can we learn from all this (not insubstantial) cumulative experience? (A) A dominant country is required for a Union to succeed. It must have a strong geopolitical drive and maintain political solidarity with some of the other members. It must be big, influential, and its economy must be intermeshed with the economies of the others. (B) Central institutions must be set up to monitor and enforce fiscal and other policies, to coordinate activities of the member states, to implement political and technical decisions, to control the money aggregates and seniorage (=money printing), to determine the legal tender and the rules governing the issuance of money. (C) It is better if a monetary union is preceded by a political one. Even so, it might prove tricky (consider the examples of the USA and of Germany). (D) Wage and price flexibility are sine qua non. Their absence is a threat to the continued existence of any union. Fiscal policy (money transfers from rich areas to poor) are a partial remedy. They can mitigate and ameliorate problems - but not solve them. Transfers also call for a clear and consistent fiscal policy regarding taxation and expenditures. Problems like unemployment plague a rigid, sedimented union. The works of Mundell and McKinnon (optimal currency areas) prove it decisively (and separately). (E) The last prerequisite is clear convergence criteria and monetary convergence targets. Judging by these requirements, the current European monetary union did not sufficiently assimilate the lessons of its ill begotten predecessors. It is set in a Europe more rigid in its labour and pricing practices than 150 years ago, it was not preceded by serious political amalgamation, it relies too heavily on transfers without having in place either a coherent monetary or a consistent fiscal policy. This monetary union is, therefore, likely to join its forefathers and remain a footnote in the annals of economic history. Good Things Come To Those Who Wait

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

By Elizabeth Marks Im sure youre heard the saying good things come to those who wait. Its true and its biblical. Look at Romans 2:7-8 NKJV eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; 8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousnessindignation and wrath. Can you think of good things you had to wait for? How about a college degree? Was a college degree simply handed to you one day? No. You earned it by enduring many hours of studying, taking classes and tests. As a result, you completed the steps to obtain the degree. How about a baby? Once you decide to have a baby, did you become pregnant right away? Not usually, because it takes the right timing for your egg and your spouses sperm to come together making a baby. After the egg and sperm meet, did the baby just pop out? Of course not, it took 9 months to grow into a fully developed baby. Why then do we assume when we get married well live happily ever after with no difficulties? This is ridiculous. But Im sad to say I found myself there at one time. As a result my marriage relationship was not doing so well. Good things come to those who wait. Yes, but thats only half the story. Good things come to those who work at it. A good marriage doesnt just happen. Its takes time to develop. In the Lesson 4 of the Sacred Marriage Bible Study Gary Thomas mentions that it takes couples 10 to 15 years for a couple to finally stop thinking of themselves as individuals and to begin thinking of themselves as a unified we. Did you ever stop to think about that? It takes a long time for us to understand our new roles and identities once were married. The Bible says the two shall become one flesh. That word become indicates a process that takes time. Every marriage is bound to have difficulties. Thats a fact of life when two sinners attempt to live together for the rest of their lives. Look at what the Bibles teaches us on how to approach lifes difficulties. James 1:2-4 NKJV My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. Difficulties in life help us mature, if we allow them too. Hang in there when you find yourself in a rough patch. Its gets better and if youre open to it you might learn something from the experience. Dont give up during difficulties in marriage. Anyone can do that. Youve got God on your side and Hell help you endure the difficult parts and grow you in the process. Speaking from personal experience, my husband and I once were on the verge of divorce. However, with perseverance, we stuck out the difficulties of our marriage. As a result, we were blessed with renewed hearts, restored marriage and a second child! Weve been married now for almost 19 years and Im happy to say Im glad we decided to persevere. Lord, thank you for your goodness. Thank you for saving good things for those who persevere. Help us during the difficulties of life turn to you that we may become mature. Thank you for your blessings that come when we seek you diligently through the rough patches in life.
