Learn The Meaning Of Different Flowers

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Tom Sample Here are some common meanings of flowers, so that you will have an easy reference guide for sending flowers to your loved ones. Alstromeria: Devotion, Wealth, prosperity, fortune, friendship, pleasantries. Origin & History: Alstromeria is named after the Swedish botanist Baron Klas von Alstroemer. This South American flower’s seeds were among many collected by von Alstroemer on a trip to Spain in 1753. Aster: Symbol of love, Daintiness. Origin & History: The English called asters both “asters” and “starwort”; Aster, Latin for “star,” referred to the flower’s star-like shape, while wort meant “root,” which then applied to plants with healing properties. There are over 600 species of aster, the most popular being the Monte Casino. Azalea: Take care of yourself for me, Temperance, Fragile Passion, Your blush has won me, Moderation, Chinese Symbol of Womanhood. History & Origin: The different between Azaleas and Rhododendrons could be a subject open to debate. The name Azalea comes from the Greek word, azaleos meaning dry which is actually a contradiction of the plant. Most azaleas do not thrive in dry ground and need to be well watered because of the shallowness of their rooting system. Bachelor Button: Hope and love, Hope, Single Blessedness, Celibacy, Hope in love, Felicity, Delicacy. Bird of Paradise: Freedom, Magnificence, Good perspective. Origin & History: Botanists are divided on how this remarkable flower got its name. Some maintain that the flower’s brilliant orange and blue blossom, which resembles a bird in flight, is named after the bird of paradise itself - one of the most beautiful bird species in the world. However, since this flower is also known as the strelitzia, some believe that it was named after England’s Queen Charlotte. Calendula (Mary’s Gold): winning grace. Origin & History: The calendula’s genus name, wor calendae, means “throughout the months.” A member of the marigold family, calendula was valued historically for its medicinal and culinary uses. An ancient beverage made from a mixture of calendula blossoms in wine was said to soothe indigestion. Calendula petals were used in ointments that cured skin irritations, jaundice, sore eyes, and toothaches. The Romans used calendula mixed with vinegar to season their meat and salad dishes. Camellia: GENERAL-Admiration, Perfection, Good Luck Gift To A Man; PINK-Longing for You; RED-You’re A Flame in My Heart; WHITE-You’re Adorable Carnation: GENERAL-Fascination, Woman’s Love; PINK-I’ll Never Forget You; RED-My Heart Aches For You, Admiration; PURPLE-Capriciousness; SOLID COLOR-Yes; STRIPPED-No, Refusal, Sorry I Can’t Be With You, Wish I Could Be with You; WHITE-Sweet and Lovely, Innocence, Pure Love, Woman’s Good Luck Gift; YELLOW-You Have Disappointed Me, Rejection. Origin & History: The carnation - originally called dianthus by the Greek botanist Theophrastus - is native to the Near East and has been cultivated for the last 2,000 years. Some scholars believe that the name “carnation” comes from “coronation” or “corone” (flower garlands), as it was one of the flowers used in Greek ceremonial crowns. Others think the name stems from the Greek carnis (flesh), which refers to the original color of the flower, or incarnacyon (incarnation), which refers to the incarnation of God made flesh. What You Can Do When Your Feet Catch Fire, Part 1

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

By John Young His toes were on fire. Trying to ignore the searing pain in his right foot propped against the accelerator, Pete gritted his teeth and focused on the heavy rush hour traffic. The tingling in his toes had begun about a year ago, and he had had no idea what was causing it and it kept worsening. Finally, he mentioned it to his coworkers, some of whom thought it might be gangrene. Panicked, he went to the doctor who diagnosed it as “Peripheral Neuropathy”, and checked his blood sugar levels. Dr. Hammond explained that Peripheral Neuropathy was usually caused by nerve deterioration in the extremities, and began with a tingling sensation in the toes or fingers. The “wiring” in his body had become damaged, and was now transmitting sensations that weren’t there. He prescribed Neurontin, a drug originally developed to control seizures, but had been discovered to work as a “pain manager” in the condition of Peripheral Neuropathy. “It’s not a cure,” he said. “We have no idea how it works. But it’ll reduce the pain and keep you functional” Pete didn’t like the words “it’ll keep you functional.” The phrase definitely had an ominous ring to it. He took Neurontin faithfully according to prescription, and for awhile it worked, but it wasn’t too long before he began to see what Dr. Hammond was alluding too. The painful sensations increased, and it seemed like it was getting more difficult for the drug to handle them. Then, one day, he forgot to take his medicine, and he vowed he would never do it again. Without the pain manager, the pain level ramped up several orders of magnitude, and Pete discovered that the full extent of his condition had been masked by the drug. Neuropathy had taken over half of his foot. Sledgehammers slammed against his feet. Hot blowtorches seared his toes. Hot rocks were jammed inside the soles of his feet. Once … worst of all … a white hot band saw tried to cut his foot half off. Now he knew he was now entirely dependent on the Neurontin. Without it, he couldn’t endure the pain… And he almost couldn’t walk at all. THERE’S DAMAGE OUT THERE SOMEWHERE So what do we mean by the term “Peripheral Neuropathy”? The nervous system of the human body is broadly divided into the Central Nervous System (CNS) and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). The former consists of the brain and spinal chord, whereas the latter is divided into the Somatic and Autonomic Nervous Systems. Peripheral Neuropathy affects the PNS, and can result in nerve damage to the Somatic or Autonomic Systems. Translated, Neuropathy can develop not only in the feet or hands, but in the nerves regulating the lungs, heart, digestive and sexual organs. In other words, it can develop anywhere and have very serious and far reaching consequences to the body. It can take the form of: — Polyneuropathy (Peripheral nerves throughout the body) — Autonomic Neuropathy (the cardiovascular system, digestive tract, bladder, or genitals) The painful sensations of Polyneuropathy, burning, itching, “electric shock”, or hammering, may develop in the feet and legs either gradually or suddenly. You may or may not get a warning before they appear. THREE STRIKES AND YOU’RE OUT Today, there are three classes of medication on the market that can treat the pain resulting from neuropathic nerve damage: — tricyclic antidepressants such as Amiriptyline (Elavil) — anticonvulsants such as Gabapentine(Neurontin) and Pregabilin (Lyrica) — Serotonin and Norepenephrin reuptake inhibitors such as Duloxeten (Cymbalta) Blocking uptake of neurotransmitters or blocking pathways in the spinal chord prevent pain signals from reaching the brain. Sodium and Calcium channels may also be blocked to keep the brain from registering pain from “cross talking” neurons. None of the medicines can be thought of as a “cure”, and if the causes of Neuropathy are not addressed, it will continue to progress. So, if Medical Science has thrown three balls at us and none of them are a “cure”, is that it? Are we stuck with merely “managing the pain” and hoping we don’t end up down the line with a foot amputation? In Part II of this series, Pete will learn more Copyright 2006 John Young John Young is a writer with a scientific and programming background. Don’t Ignore the Signs: How Emotional Infidelity Can Ruin Your Relationship

Monday, January 28th, 2008

By Keishia Lee Louis Emotional infidelity can start with a simple hi or a wink. It begins in a boardroom or a chatroom. One spouse says, “What’s the problem? We’re only friends.” The other spouse can’t believe the reassurances. So the jealousy builds and a wedge is driven between partners. Sometimes nothing really is going on, and sometimes an affair is in progress. It’s only a matter of time. So how can you tell if your spouse is a potential cheater? How can you stop a relationship from becoming romantic outside of your marriage? Here are five topics to think about before determining if your marriage is in the danger zone. 1. Secrecy: Do you feel as though your partner could be telling you more about his or her new friend? Or do you hide the details of your platonic relationship from your spouse? If so, why? It’s best not to keep secrets from your partner, even if you think he or she will be hurt, angry or jealous. If you want a successful relationship, trust and honesty is the one factor for marriage that should not be compromised. 2. Displaced Trust: Is information that should only be shared between husband and a wife, shared outside of the relationship? Topics like sexual intimacy, irreconcilable differences, personal finances, and detailed accounts of your partner’s shortcomings are best left within the constructs of your marriage relationship. 3. Comparing: Does your spouse compare you to friend(s) of the opposite sex often? Or do YOU feel as though your spouse could improve in the areas that your special friend excels? Comparing once or twice may not be a problem, but habitual comparison is a warning sign. 4. Time Management: What type of time do you spend together as a married couple? Is it mainly dutiful, like paying bills or going to conferences for the kids? Or do you actually date– one-on-one, no kids, family or friends around? If not, and you find yourself, or your partner, engaged in date like activities outside of your relationship, stop it. Either invite your spouse or don’t do it anymore. Coffee talk can turn to pillow talk in the blink of an eye. 5. Attraction: Do you feel as though your spouse like the way his/her special friend looks? Are you attracted to the way your friend looks or the way he/she does something? If so, address this issue with your partner and then try to refocus your attention on each other, rather than the outside party. If three to five of these topics need to be addressed in your marriage, I urge you to get professional help either from your religious leader or from a professional counselor. Building a Garden Pond and Perennial Flower Bed From Scratch

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Alice Scott We had a large newly created yard and I have a love of flowers so I naturally desired a flower garden. The problem was that the fill that was trucked in to create this yard was all chunks of blacktop and concrete with a light sprinkling of top soil to cover the chunks. There was no digging into the dirt without hitting something solid. We couldn’t even drive in a tent stake. The town workers were scraping the sides of the roads after a long winter of sanding icy and snowy roads. They had two loads of roadside dirt they wanted to dump that looked like pretty good dirt so I let them dump it in a pile in the back of the yard. After staring at the pile for some time, I began to see a fish pond and perennial garden in the dirt. My husband and I started working moving the dirt around to form a bowl in the center and grading the dirt away where the flowers would be planted. A flower bed would be wonderful, but with a pond in the center it will be even better. Because we didn’t know what we were doing, we used a grey plastic tarp for a liner. It worked well for two years. The spring of the third year we replaced it with rubber pond liner which will last many years. We purchased a pump and a filter so we could keep fish. We had a fairly large pile of limestone rocks left over from an old rock wall. These rocks became the border for our perennial garden. My sister has horses and a nice pile of old horse manure. She graciously brought me a pickup truck load of manure which we mixed in the dirt. There is a recycling plant nearby that makes compost so we got a load of it to help improve the soil. Another sister was cleaning out her perennial beds in the fall and throwing out a lot of overgrown plants which made great starter plants for me. I filled the back of my truck and brought them home to their new bed. I placed the plants in the ground for the winter. In the spring I divided the plants up and spread them out and had a great start on my flower bed. Each year since then I add a few plants purchased at flower shows, the grocery store, and nurseries. Ive also traded many plants with others happy to get different plants than they have. Now, seven years later, I am enjoying seven flower beds created basically the same way with beautiful flowers blooming from April through October. Cymbidiums Orchid Plants - What You Need To Grow Successfully

Friday, January 25th, 2008

By Robert Roy Cymbidium orchid plants were first mentioned in China during the Chin dynasty. Yes, way back in 265 AD. They are beautiful, delicate orchid plants which have been used for corsages. They come in a wide range of colors, including reds, yellows, whites and others. And now they are grown for the florist industry because of their large flowers, about 5+ inches. The flowers on the cymbidium orchid last for five to seven weeks. Cymbidiums are used for corsage orchids. There are other cymbidiums which do not have as large flowers, but have an intermediate size flower. One of these is the cymbidium ‘Royale’. These plants grow well outdoors and can take cool temps and even a short freeze, to about 28 degrees F. But once this occurs bring the orchid indoors. Cymbidium orchid plants usually bloom from February to May. During the summer months they will do better with cooler soil at night. If this is a problem in your region my suggestion is to add ice water to the soil after sunset during the month of August. Water them well especially during their growth period, March through September. After this you can water the cymbidium orchid plants less but not allowing them to dry out. Also, don’t rush to repot. Let the orchids get pot-bound and the psueodpods can get pushed out to the edges of the pot. Only then repot. They do better when in close quarters. These plants do need good lighting for good growth. So, don’t park them under a tree. Also, year round fertilizer is necessary. You can use a liquid fertilizer which is balanced or even a timed-release version. During the cymbidium orchid plants growth phase you will need to give them a supplement fertilizer as well. Cymbidium orchid plants can produce some of the largest flowers and ones which will last 5- 7 weeks amid the wash of great colors. Have fun with these plants, they’ll re-pay you time and time again. The Seven WRONG Reasons People Fall In Love

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By Christine Akiteng Many singles who come to see me often start with “I already know everything about dating and relationships and I do not think I need any coaching, all I want is to know how I can find my soul mate”. When we were teenagers and hopelessly romantic we really didnt care whether someone was right or wrong for us. We were fascinated with the mere idea of being in love. But many years later, hopefully, weve all learned that falling in love for all the wrong” reasons can quickly turn into a nightmare, a broken heart and can bring much pain and sorrow. There are many wrong reasons why people want to “fall in love”. Loneliness and desperation Weve all been here at one time or the other. You miss the closeness of being with someone who will hold you and make you feel special. So when you meet someone, anyone really, even an ex who treated you badly, you think this is better than nothing”. What starts as a lonely act of reaching out to another human being ends up in a complicated and hurtful relationship. There is never a happy ending to a relationship in which you sell yourself off like second hand merchandize. Distraction from the problems in your life Some people get into a relationship to avoid dealing with what is going on in their lives. They believe that a relationship will make it all go away or even better bring passion, purpose and excitement into their lives. When the relationship fails to do this, which is usually the case, they end up in the same place they were before - just themselves and their problems. Then when they are single again, they resolve to better their lives they set goals, buy a self help book and even attend a couple of personal development workshops but this only lasts a few weeks, before they start looking for someone and something to distract them from their problems. It’s a dance that never ends. Pressure to get married and have kids We live in a world where people have an age by which we should be married. So you end up having a relationship just because everyone says you should. One day you wake up to the fact that you are not in love with your partner. Whether the pressure comes from your family, your friends or from your own urgency, making a decision to be with someone because of the pressure you feel is giving away your power and happiness. Is it really worthy it? Replaying childhood roles Some of us use relationships to avoid growing up. We look for someone who will take care of us or someone who needs us to be mom or dad. This has nothing to do with one partner being younger or older, but about finding partners who are either too domineering or emotionally immature and who we can depend on or who depend on us. If you are a loving and caring person but find yourself stifled by your partners neediness or your partners leave you and immediately marry someone else, then may be you need to look at the kind of choices you make and how they mirror your childhood role. Starving for sex We each have our own I got to get some or else I’ll go crazy” limit. When you are so horny especially because you havent had sex for a long time, you can talk yourself into having a relationship with just about anyone and can come up with so many good” reasons why having sex with someone you are not even in love with is okay. There is a high price we pay for being horny and indiscriminate - and the highs price is not just limited to below the waist. As a conscious dater, take note of your “sex-hunger” limit and be more careful as the time approaches to avoid jumping into the sack with the wrong people. Mistaking sympathy for love This one was mine and I could easily have earned a PhD in Love Rescue Missions”. It starts out with good intention to “make it up” for someone who has been badly hurt either emotionally, physically or financially and it ends with you feeling guilty for abandoning them too. You find yourself trapped in a relationship with someone who loves and needs you more than you do them. A relationship based on sympathy and guilt - or on the extreme pity - is emotionally and even spiritually unhealthy and will only end up hurting the person you are trying to protect from being hurt. Lack of wholeness and sense of completeness If youve never had a relationship in which you feel whole and completely fulfilled, its time you realized that no man or woman however much they love you will be able to make you whole or complete. Your need for wholeness is really your spiritual hunger. And your need for completeness is your emotional hunger. No one is going to make you happy and fulfilled until you are happy with yourself. What you need is not a relationship but time to discover and love yourself before you can expect someone else to love you. Relationships can be your greatest source of pain or your greatest teacher, and only you can decide which one. Before you can find and create a healthy relationship or improve the one you are already in, you must truly get in touch with your loving self. Until you are overflowing with love and just cant wait to give some of that abundance to someone else, you will continue to attract others who bring you more emptiness, more pain and more disappointment. When you enter into a relationship you are also standing in front of a mirror and your partner is the reflection of yourself. When you dislike or reject what the mirror is reflecting back to you, you become angry with your partner. So before you begin wanting a relationship, ask yourself if you are willing to learn more about yourself as reflected by your partner. And what exactly would your partner be reflecting back to you? Title: Alcoholic Drinks And Its Effect on Your Weight Loss Program

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Tracy Lee “I’ll just have a little…” If you are not careful, this little phrase can be an absolute killer for your weight loss plans during this holiday season. And I’m not just talking about the food. The hidden danger is in all the alcoholic drinks and cocktails that’s being offered to you. Yes, those party drinks can do more harm other than just getting you intoxicated and embarassingly uninhibited! Did you know that these drinks contain an incredible number of calories? In fact, alcohol is the number two most energy-dense food, losing out only to fat. Fat has 9 calories per gram, and alcohol comes in a close second at a whopping 7 calories per gram. What this means is that each alcoholic drink you consume will cause you to take in an alarmingly high number of calories. Here’s a sample of some of the more popular drinks, together with their calorie counts… 1 glass of Bailey’s lrish Cream - 468 calories 1 glass of Margarita - 453 calories 1 glass of Martini - 413 calories 1 glass of Pina Colada - 297 calories 1 glass of Vodka Cranberry - 250 calories 1 glass of Rum & cola - 240 calories 1 glass of Screwdriver - 200 calories 1 mug of beer - 150 calories 1 glass of white wine - 120 calories 1 tequila shot - 100 calories To put those calorie counts into perspective, I’d like to just point out that 2 glasses of Margaritas would have given you about _half_ of your daily calories requirements. Yes, 50% from just 2 drinks. And we have not even included the calories from the food, nuts and snacks yet! Once we add those in, can you see how easy it is for you to go over the daily calorie requirements, and start piling on the pounds? Now, this doesn’t mean that you should stay away from the alcoholic drinks. It’s just that when you drink, you should keep in mind the huge amount of calories in the drinks. I want you to have fun this holiday. So, if you are the sort that enjoys a drink of two at your parties, I want to leave you with a couple of useful tips to help to reduce the “guilt factor”. - Fill up your glass with lots of ice cubes. You’ll not only get a nice cold drink, the water from the melted ice has zero calories too. - Use soda water to dilute your drink. This helps to fill you up quicker, and it means you won’t get tipsy too quickly. - And probably the most important tip… Do not use the alcoholic drinks to quench your thirst. Remember, you should be drinking these party drinks for fun. After the heavy meal or when you had too much salty snacks, go drink a big glass of water first to quench your thirst. Water works better for this, and it has zero calories! I hope you have loads of fun… and Happy Holidays! Copyright 2005 Tracy Lee Tracy Lee is the owner of the “Weight Loss for Women Over 40″ site. What You Should Never Put on Your Resume

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

By Roger Clark Liars Get Caught! What NOT to Put on Your Resume “Everybody does it” as they say. Face it, the job market can be a very tough place to compete. If everyone inflates their experience then how can an honest person get a job? Well, as tempting as it may be, you do NOT want to risk lying on your resume. Whether it’s personal information, job experience, or schooling - employers are finding new ways to sniff out liars and you don’t want to be one of them. PERSONAL INFORMATION While some information may not be easily verified, information such as a criminal record, can be very costly to you in the event it is checked out. With sites like rapsheets.com you can never guarantee that an employer won’t be able to find the information, even if your employer is hiring you for domestic work and is not a business. JOB EXPERIENCE Clearly this is not the place to boast about fake employment as you are going to list the businesses you worked for which may be contacted for verification. As this is the most likely area your interviewer will do a check on, avoid misrepresenting yourself at all costs. EDUCATION Think that nobody will notice if you slip in an education you don’t really have? Perhaps you do have the skills, but you can’t afford to claim education you can’t provide proof of. EmployAct.com is a new service that will allow employers to have background checks - similar to criminal or credit checks - to verify your claim. WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE With all that said and done, how can you create a resume that will highlight your skills and abilities without needing to lie? Give yourself credit. Your skills in the workforce can be weighty indicators of your ability to work in a given job. You may not know what an employer is looking for. With many jobs that don’t require a particular expertise, you many find that they are looking for people who are able to learn on the job. Proof that you have gained skills as a worker (or even a volunteer if you’re just starting out) can be very valuable. Be certain that you focus on skills. Expand your descriptions. Do not say ‘I worked in an office’, rather say ‘I was responsible for answering the phones in a professional manner and directing calls to the proper departments. In a busy work environment I was able to multi-task by providing supportive administrative assistance to the head receptionist including maintaining a filing system, processing inter office memos, delivering documents in a timely manner, directing clients to their meeting appointments and providing relief reception. I was quickly able to learn the filing and switchboard systems as well as create good working relationships with fellow staff.’ As you can see from the above example, it is perfectly acceptable to elaborate on your skills, but do so in an honest and ethical manner. If you need help you can find software programs which will give you suggestions on wording depending on the position you are describing or you can hire someone who writes resumes to help you. Have confidence in keeping the job you are sure to get by doing it right the first time.
