Kill Obesity With Phentermine

Monday, March 31st, 2008

By Ian Mason You can kill obesity with Phentermine, but you cannot live on Phentermine for ever. Phentermine is a drug that is used to suppress you appetite in case you have the urge to slurp sugary or fatty foods. Phentermine acts a suppressant by increasing your blood pressure and your heart rate there by releasing juices in to your stomach which decreases appetite. When this diet pill is consumed you will not have an urge to go in for the sugary or fatty foods. But then this is not healthy living. You cannot live healthy by popping a diet pill daily and then forgetting it for the rest of the day. Healthy living is having a good workout at least four days a week and going for walks in your neighbor hood park for about twenty minutes daily. This is going to keep you fit and fine for a long time. This is the most natural way to lose weight. If you are declared obese by physician then it is high time that you chalked out a plan to lose weight. Make a routine and follow it strictly. Do not get lazy and find a solace in I will do it tomorrow. The tomorrow’” attitude is never going to get you any where. The tomorrow is never going to come. You will realize this only when you are being wheeled in a stretcher for your operation. Dieting is also beneficial for your body. Having fried foods one in a while is not going to harm your health, but then living on junk foods will eventually get you? There is a wrong impression that diet drinks are healthy. Yes they have less calorific content than their counter parts, but then plain old water is healthy. Once you get hooked to junk foods then there is no way out. You are too lazy to cook foods to eat, this leads to adding on calories by junk food. Fried foods are biggest hitters below the belt. If you can fast once in a week there is nothing like it. Phentermine is prescribed for obese people to help them reduce weight as an immediate measure. Take Phentermine under strict medical supervision. The drug makes you dizzy and drowsy. Do not do heavy jobs and stand near high speed machinery if you are under the influence of the drug. This will cause fatalities. Even though no side effects have been observed on people using Phentermine, it is always advisable to take this under medical supervision. Along with taking Phentermine you should do your workouts and dieting. Phentermine has some withdrawal symptoms. You should not stop taking Phentermine suddenly. It may cause depression and other related medical disorders. When you are under Phentermine, you should have stopped eating high calorie food. Phentermine is going to do you no good if you are munching away on those fried goodies and chocolates. As I have discussed earlier, Phentermine is not a solution by itself. This is a helping hand in your decision to fight obesity. It can help you kill the urge; it cannot help you kill the greed. Decide for yourself whether Phentermine is right for you when you visit PhenForum.com, the phentermine discussion forum and weight loss support group offering extensive research on Phentermine diet pills as well as weight loss tips for healthy, permanent weight loss. Intelligent Design of Mankind or Random Chaos of Evolution

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By Lance Winslow Recently a heated debate broke out at a Think Tank and in this think tank an Atheist and Christian Scholar politely argued over the possibility of science and researchers being able to develop the perfect artificial intelligent computer chip able to fully integrate itself with while being human/computer interface enabled. Having cognitive functions and add-on memory to name a few of its capabilities. The debate turned into a side question of whether mans brain was a physical brain working as a spirit or if the brain worked randomly. Without knowing of the atheists knowledge or theories of how the brain worked the Christian Scholar stated: If this is so, then by your theory that your thoughts come from your brain which is physical particles, your thoughts are chaotic random arrangements, they mean nothing and they prove nothing and therefore your own words are self-contradictory when you claim that you know you are right. The Atheist countered this comment as this was nothing near his thinking, but also added some other insight perhaps worthy of mention and stated: Wait one second Dear Sir, being right or knowing truth is subjective and I did not say everything is chaotic. In fact those are words you put into my mouth, prior to proper input of my observations. Additionally the brain does not work on complete chaos, as the brain seems to spend a lot of time defragging while sleeping. I use the term loosely as the organic brain is not a computer, it is much better than one in many regards, yet not as good in others. The brain is set up to categorize and make connections and imprints of electrical impulse flows in its storage mechanism. Additionally one theories of chaos, randomness or order, have nothing to do with self-contradiction of what is right or wrong or a near miss. It does not prove the meaning of anything is No thing or even if the existence of No Thing is even possible, thus how could anything be possible. Therefore your multiple variables to prove your point are in error, even if one did believe in a fate or randomness that would not make truth an either/or choice. If indeed total truth could exist. So, in review you have miss characterized my thoughts on the matter, brought us to an irrelevant point and failed to make yours. Try again. What do you think of the physical particle comment or self-contradiction of chaos and randomness? What do you think of the way misunderstandings break out and impede thought between atheists and Christians? How would you explain what is going on in the human brain? Do you believe truth and perception are subjective? Which side of this argument do you fall on? We would like to hear your input on this? Think on this in 2006. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. School Party Planning With The Kids and Parents

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

By Gail Leino School Party means nothing but fun for the kids and the parents who are accompanying them. The word party just serves as a swing in the world of kids who love to have fun all the time. Keeping this in mind that they are the ones for whom the entire program is planned, it is really important that you focus to take the opinions and suggestions from the kids. It might be a unique thought, for some it might sound like a source of stress, but a month or two before you are going to plan out a party you can for their suggestions. Your School Party will rock when the different kids would see their different opinions being practical and implemented in the party. You need to make a list of different things that are necessary for the party such as invitation cards, decorations, food, games, gifts etc., which then would be sent out to all the kids, tell them that they need to fill in the list and return it in a few days so that you would have an idea as to what the kids want for their party. When you have got the lists back, now you can start planning out for the School Party. You must sit down and read all the suggestions that the kids have given and sort out as to what suggestions are the best. Once you have sorted them out, then it is time to start working on them and the best part of it would be to get your kids be a part of it throughout, and ask for their suggestions at every point in time, as they would be the ones who are going to share the best with you. Happy Partying to all. Chocolate And Flower Gifts

Monday, March 24th, 2008

By Eddie Tobey Flowers are a gift from nature and are known for their universal appeal. There are natural as well as artificial varieties of flowers that are used to prepare beautiful gift hampers. On special occasions, people buy flower gifts to present to their friends. There are flower gifts that are accompanied with various edible or non-edible products. The chocolate and flower gift baskets are ideal gift options during a corporate gathering, anniversary or birthday. There are various flowers that are apt for chocolate and flower gift baskets. They include rose, chrysanthemum, daffodil, camellia and dahlia. They can be arranged in a vase with edible items such as chocolates, candies or sweets. It can be a beautiful carnation in a watering can or a tulip with scrumptious dark chocolates in a vase. Chocolate and flower gifts are also gifted during occasions such as arrival of newborn babies, housewarming parties, Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Christmas and other festivities. When purchasing flowers for any occasion, buyers should be careful in their selection. This is because fresh flowers have a limited lifespan and tend to wither away after some time. As a result, many people opt for fresh flower buds, as they only start to wither after they completely bloom. People need to provide necessary details of fresh flower requirements to the vendor. It allows company specialists to estimate quantity and type. Such calculations should be made well in advance in order to get the best fresh flowers. Fresh flower purchase prices vary depending upon bouquet designs, flower varieties, combinations and availability of selected flowers. Silk flowers can be used to gift people staying miles away. The gift basket can be decorated with ribbons or artificial twigs and rock chocolates can be placed amidst them. The florist companies pack them taking adequate measures to avoid bending or spoiling them. Chocolate and flower gifts are a great gift option, as they not only provide a visual treat, but also a treat to the taste buds. Flower Gifts provides detailed information on Flower Gifts, Flower Gift Baskets, Thanksgiving Flower Gifts, Birthday Flower Gifts and more. Flower Gifts is affiliated with New York Flower District. Signs of an Unfaithful Spouse

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

By Andrew Bicknell Has something changed in your spouses behavior? Is the person you fell in love with no longer that same person? Marriages and relationships change over time just because thats the way of the world. There are ups and downs but a strong marriage will continue to grow. When there is no longer any growth, more downs then ups and you start to get the feeling that things arent quite what they used to be it might be time to take a closer look at the possible signs of an unfaithful spouse. When looking for the signs of an unfaithful spouse remember that these are only signs, and while infidelity may be the most likely reason in certain cases it is not. The important thing to remember at this stage is that if your encounter enough of the signs of unfaithfulness the next step is to get the proof you need to confront your spouse. Once you have confronted your spouse there is usually no turning back from the hurt and the pain that is to follow. Again, if you have that fear tickling the back of your head start looking for the signs that something may be wrong. If you do see that your spouse is exhibiting several of these signs it can be a good indicator that something is indeed wrong with your marriage. 1. The new friend Your spouse suddenly has a new friend of the opposite sex who they seem to be spending a lot of time with. When you ask about this person you get the standard, Were just friends, answer and your spouse may become very defensive about the relationship. 2. Working late If your spouse, who never used to work late, is suddenly calling and leaving messages about working late all the time you should probably wonder why. If the time away is more than it should be and the excuses dont really seem plausible then start looking for the other signs. 3. Looking good All of a sudden your spouse seems to take greater interest in how they look. And heres the important part, they arent doing it for you or they seem disinterested when you compliment them on how good they are looking lately. 4. Emotional detachment What was once a marriage that involved communication about everything has changed to conversations about nothing. Maybe a few words about what is happening at work but nothing that is overly important. Even subject that used to bring about arguments are met with indifference. 5. Privacy issues If your marriage was once very open with little to hide but your spouse has suddenly become more private with their daily activities and their personal business. They may even accuse you of snooping if you are trying to find something in their purse or wallet, something you used to do all the time. 6. Sex This can go either way. Your spouse may come up with all sorts of excuses not to get naked with you. The other thing that may happen is your spouse is suddenly interested in doing things youve never even heard of or thought to try. They may be learning new things from someone else. 7. The high tech affair New or strange behavior when it comes to the use of their cell phone or computer may be a sign of an unfaithful spouse. Hanging up suddenly when you enter the room, call history suddenly being erased all the time and calls at strange hours are all indicators. 8. Problems with money If money is strangely being withdrawn from bank accounts with no explanation or your spouse suddenly has a need to carry more cash but dont really have a reason then there may be trouble. This is also true if there are strange charges on credit cards, bills that you normally dont have or even missing bills and credit card statements. 9. I dont love you anymore This can mean that your spouse may be more interested in someone else. They are comparing their feelings for you with their feelings for their new friend. There is a very good chance that that your spouse is already involved or thinking of becoming involved with someone other then you. There are studies that show that 85% of the women who believe their partner is cheating are right and that 50% of men who think that they have an unfaithful spouse are correct. If you think you have an unfaithful spouse look for the warning signs and if the signs are there it is time to start doing some detective work and get actual proof of an affair. If the signs of a cheating spouse are present and its time to obtain proof of an unfaithful spouse wife click here. Financial Definitions; R thru Z

Monday, March 17th, 2008

By Roger Sorensen The ever increasing number of investment products and financial services in the marketplace today can be confusing. We have put together this glossary of financial definitions designed to help you understand some of the more common investment and financial terms you may encounter. Your financial advisor can explain these terms more completely and discuss with you those which are relevant to your situation. Rally - A brisk rise following a decline in the general price level of the market, or in an individual stock. Record Date - The date on which you must be registered as a shareholder of a company in order to receive a declared dividend or, among other things, to vote on company affairs. Redemption Price - The price at which a bond may be redeemed before maturity, at the option of the issuing company. Redemption value also applies to the price the company must pay to call in certain types of preferred stock. REIT - Real Estate Investment Trust, an organization similar to an investment company in some respects but concentrating its holdings in real estate investments. The yield is generally liberal since REITs are required to distribute as much as 90% of their income. Refinancing - Same as refunding. New securities are sold by a company and the money is used to retire existing securities. Object may be to save interest costs, extend the maturity of the loan, or both. Registered Bond - A bond that is registered on the books of the issuing company in the name of the owner. It can be transferred only when endorsed by the registered owner. Registered Competitive Market Maker - Members of the New York Stock Exchange who trade on the floor for their own or their firm’s account and who have an obligation, when called upon by an Exchange official, to narrow a quote or improve the depth of an existing quote by their own bid or offer. Registered Representative - The man or woman who serves the investor customers of a broker/dealer. In a New York Stock Exchange member organization, a Registered Representative must meet the requirements of the Exchange as to background and knowledge of the securities business. Also known as an Account Executive or Customer’s Broker. Registrar - Usually a trust company or bank charged with the responsibility of keeping record of the owners of a corporation’s securities and preventing the issuance of more than the authorized amount. Registration - Before a public offering may be made of new securities by a company, the securities must be registered under the Securities Act of 1933. A registration statement is filed with the SEC by the issuer. It must disclose pertinent information relating to the company’s operations, securities, management and purpose of the public offering. Before a security may be admitted to dealings on a national securities exchange, it must be registered under the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. The application for registration must be filed with the exchange and the SEC by the company issuing the securities. Regular Way Delivery - Unless otherwise specified, securities sold on the New York Stock Exchange are to be delivered to the buying broker by the selling broker and payment made to the selling broker by the buying broker on the third business day after the transaction. Regular way delivery for bonds is the following business day. Regulation T - The federal regulation governing the amount of credit that may be advanced by brokers and dealers to customers for the purchase of securities. Regulation U - The federal regulation governing the amount of credit that may be advanced by a bank to its customers for the purchase of listed stocks. Rights - When a company wants to raise more funds by issuing additional securities, it may give its stockholders the opportunity, ahead of others, to buy the new securities in proportion to the number of shares each owns. The piece of paper evidencing this privilege is called a right. Because the additional stock is usually offered to stockholders below the current market price, rights ordinarily have a market value of their own and are actively traded. In most cases they must be exercised within a relatively short period. Failure to exercise or sell rights may result in monetary loss to the holder. Round Lot - A unit of trading or a multiple thereof. On the NYSE the unit of trading is generally 100 shares in stocks and $1,000 or $5,000 par value in the case of bonds. In some inactive stocks, the unit of trading is 10 shares. Scale Order - An order to buy (or sell) a security, that specifies the total amount to be bought (or sold) at specified price variations. Scripophily - A term coined in the mid-1970’s to describe the hobby of collecting antique bonds, stocks and other financial instruments. Values are affected by beauty of the certificate and the issuer’s role in world finance and economic development. Seat - A traditional figure-of-speech for a membership on an exchange. SEC - The Securities and Exchange Commission, established by Congress to help protect investors. The SEC administers the Securities Act of 1933, the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, the Securities Act Amendments of 1975, the Trust Indenture Act, the Investment Company Act, the Investment Advisers Act, and the Public Utility Holding Company Act. Secondary Distribution - Also known as secondary offering. The redistribution of a block of stock some time after it has been sold by the issuing company. The sale is handled off the NYSE by a securities firm or group of firms and the shares are usually offered at a fixed price related to the current market price of the stock. Usually the block is a large one, such as might be involved in the settlement of an estate. The security may be listed or unlisted. Seller’s Option - A special transaction on the NYSE that gives the seller the right to deliver the stock or bond at any time within a specified period, ranging from not less than two business days to not more than 60 days. Serial Bond - An issue that matures in part at periodic stated intervals. Settlement - Conclusion of a securities transaction when a customer pays a broker/dealer for securities purchased or delivers securities sold and receives from the broker the proceeds of a sale. Short Covering - Buying stock to return stock previously borrowed to make delivery on a short sale. Short Position - Stocks, options, or futures contracts sold short and not covered as of a particular date. On the NYSE, a tabulation is issued once a month listing all issues on the Exchange in which there was a short position of 5,000 or more shares and issues in which the short position had changed by 2,000 or more shares in the preceding month. Short position also means the total amount of stock an individual has sold short and has not covered, as of a particular date. Short Sale - A transaction by a person who believes a security will decline and sells it, though the person does not own any. For instance: You instruct your broker to sell short 100 shares of XYZ. Your broker borrows the stock so delivery can be made to the buyer. The money value of the shares borrowed is deposited by your broker with the lender. Sooner or later you must cover your short sale by buying the same amount of stock you borrowed for return to the lender. If you are able to buy XYZ at a lower price than you sold it for, your profit is the difference between the two prices - not counting commissions and taxes. But if you have to pay more for the stock than the price you received, that is the amount of your loss. Stock exchange and federal regulations govern and limit the conditions under which a short sale may be made on a national securities exchange. Sometimes people will sell short a stock they already own in order to protect a paper profit. This is know as selling short against the box. SIAC - Securities Industry Automation Corporation, an independent organization established by the New York and American Stock Exchanges as a jointly owned subsidiary to provide automation, data processing, clearing and communications services. Sinking Fund - Money regularly set aside by a company to redeem its bonds, debentures or preferred stock from time to time as specified in the indenture or charter. SIPC - Securities Investor Protection Corporation, which provides funds for use, if necessary, to protect customers’ cash and securities that may be on deposit with a SIPC member firm in the event the firm fails and is liquidated under the provisions of the SIPC Act. SIPC is not a government agency. It is a non-profit membership corporation created, however, by an act of Congress. Specialist - A member of the New York Stock Exchange who has two primary functions: first, to maintain an orderly market in the securities registered to the specialist. In order to maintain an orderly market, the Exchange expects specialists to buy or sell for their own account, to a reasonable degree, when there is a temporary disparity between supply and demand; second, the specialist acts as a broker’s broker. When commission brokers on the Exchange floor receive a limit order, say, to buy at $50 a stock then selling at $60 - they cannot wait at the post where the stock is traded to see if the price reaches the specified level. They leave the order with a specialist, who will try to execute it in the market if and when the stock declines to the specified price. At all times the specialists must put their customers’ interest above their own. Speculation - The employment of funds by a speculator. Safety of principal is a secondary factor. Speculator - One who is willing to assume a relatively large risk in the hope of gain. Spin Off - The separation of a subsidiary or division of a corporation from its parent by issuing shares in a new corporate entity. Shareowners in the parent receive shares in the new company in proportion to their original holding and the total value remains approximately the same. Split - The division of the outstanding shares of a corporation into a larger number of shares. A 3-for-1 split by a company with 1 million shares outstanding results in 3 million shares outstanding. Each holder of 100 shares before the 3-for-1 split would have 300 shares, although the proportionate equity in the company would remain the same; 100 parts of 1 million are the equivalent of 300 parts of 3 million. Ordinarily splits must be voted by directors and approved by shareholders. Stock Exchange - An organized marketplace for securities featured by the centralization of supply and demand for the transaction of orders by member brokers for institutional and individual investors. Stock Dividend - A dividend paid in securities rather than in cash. The dividend may be additional shares of the issuing company, or in shares of another company (usually a subsidiary) held by the company. Stockholder of Record - A stockholder whose name is registered on the books of the issuing corporation. Stock Index Futures - Futures contracts based on market indexes, e.g. NYSE Composite Index Futures Contracts. Stock Ticker Symbols - Every corporation whose transactions are reported on the NYSE or AMEX ticker or on NASDAQ has been given a unique identification symbol of up to four letters. These symbols abbreviate the complete corporate name and facilitate trading and ticker reporting. Some of the most famous symbols are: T(American Telephone & Telegraph), XON (Exxon), GM (General Motors), IBM (International Business Machines), S (Sears Roebuck), and XRX (Xerox). Stop Limit Order - A stop order that becomes a limit order after the specified stop price has been reached. Stop Order - An order to buy at a price above or sell at a price below the current market. Stop buy orders are generally used to limit loss or protect unrealized profits on a short sale. Stop sell orders are generally used to protect unrealized profits or limit loss on a holding. A stop order becomes a market order when the stock sells at or beyond the specified price and, thus, may not necessarily be executed at that price. Street Name - Securities held in the name of a broker instead of a customer’s name are said to be carried in “street name.” This occurs when the securities have been bought on margin or when the customer wishes the security to be held by the broker. Swapping - Selling one security and buying a similar one almost at the same time to take a loss, usually for tax purposes. Syndicate - A group of investment bankers who together underwrite and distribute a new issue of securities or a large block of an outstanding issue. Technical Research - Analysis of the market and stocks based on supply and demand. The technician studies price movements, volume, trends and patterns, which are revealed by charting these factors, and attempts to assess the possible effect of current market action on future supply and demand for securities and individual issues. Tender Offer - A public offer to buy shares from existing stockholders of one public corporation by another public corporation under specified terms good for a certain time period. Stockholders are asked to “tender” (surrender) their holdings for stated value, usually at a premium above current market price, subject to the tendering of a minimum and maximum number of shares. Third Market - Trading of stock exchange listed securities in the over-the-counter market by non-exchange member brokers. Ticker - A telegraphic system that continuously provides the last sale prices and volume of securities transactions on exchanges. Information is either printed or displayed on a moving tape after each trade. Time Value - The part of an option premium that is in excess of the intrinsic value. Trader - Individuals who buy and sell for their own accounts for short-term profit. Also, an employee of a broker/dealer or financial institution who specializes in handling purchases and sales of securities for the firm and/or its clients. Trading Post - The structure on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange at which stocks or options are bought and sold. Transfer - This term may refer to two different operations. For one, the delivery of a stock certificate from the seller’s broker to the buyer’s broker and legal change of ownership, normally accomplished within a few days. For another, to record the change of ownership on the books of the corporation by the transfer agent. When the purchaser’s name is recorded, dividends, notices of meetings, proxies, financial reports and all pertinent literature sent by the issuer to its securities holders are mailed direct to the new owner. Transfer Agent - A transfer agent keeps a record of the name of each registered shareowner, his or her address, the number of shares owned, and sees that certificates presented for transfer are properly canceled and new certificates issued in the name of the new owner. Treasury Stock - Stock issued by a company but later reacquired. It may be held in the company’s treasury indefinitely, reissued to the public, or retired. Treasury stock receives no dividends and has no vote while held by the company. Turnover Rate - The volume of shares traded in a year as a percentage of total shares listed on an Exchange, outstanding for an individual issue or held in an institutional portfolio. Underlying - The security that one has the right to buy or sell according to the terms of an option contract. Unlisted Stock - A security not listed on a stock exchange. Up Tick - A term used to designate a transaction made at a price higher than the preceding transaction. Also called a “plus-tick.” A “zero-plus” tick is a term used for a transaction at the same price as the preceding trade but higher than the preceding different price. Conversely, a down tick, or “minus” tick, is a term used to designate a transaction made at a price lower than the preceding trade. A plus sign, or a minus sign, is displayed throughout the day next to the last price of each stock at the trading post on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Variable Annuity - A life insurance policy where the annuity premium (a set amount of dollars) is immediately turned into units of a portfolio of stocks. Upon retirement, the policyholder is paid according to accumulated units, the dollar value of which varies according to the performance of the stock portfolio. Its objective is to preserve, through stock investment, the purchasing value of the annuity which otherwise is subject to erosion through inflation. Volume - The number of shares or contracts traded in a security or an entire market during a given period. Volume is usually considered on a daily basis and a daily average is computed for longer periods. Voting Right - The common stockholders’ right to vote their stock in affairs of a company. Preferred stock usually has the right to vote when preferred dividends are in default for a specified period. The right to vote may be delegated by the stockholder to another person. Warrant - A certificate giving the holder the right to purchase securities at a stipulated price within a specified time limit or perpetually. Sometimes a warrant is offered with securities as an inducement to buy. When Issued - A short form of “when, as and if issued.” The term indicates a conditional transaction in a security authorized for issuance but not as yet actually issued. All “when issued” transactions are on an “if” basis, to be settled if and when the actual security is issued and the exchange or National Association of Securities Dealers rules the transactions are to be settled. Working Control - Theoretically, ownership of 51 percent of a company’s voting stock is necessary to exercise control. In practice - and this is particularly true in the case of a large corporation - effective control sometimes can be exerted through ownership, individually or by a group acting in concert, of less than 50 percent. Writer - A person who assumes the obligation to sell (call) or buy (put) the underlying security at an option’s exercise price. Yield - Also known as return. The dividends or interest paid by a company expressed as a percentage of the current price. A stock with a current market value of $40 a share paying dividends at the rate of $3.20 is said to return 8 percent ($3.20 $40.00). The current yield on a bond is figured the same way. Yield To Maturity - The yield of a bond to maturity takes into account the price discount from or premium over the face amount. It is greater than the current yield when the bond is selling at a discount and less than the current yield when the bond is selling at a premium. Zero Coupon Bond - A bond which pays no interest but is priced, at issue, at a discount from its redemption price. Confronting Anti-Muslim Bias; Are Muslims Battling a Mirage

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

By Luqman Ahmad` Coverage of Muslims and Islam is a bread and butter media commodity. First amendment guarantees and free speech provisions in western countries limit censorship based upon sensitivities of a particular religious group. Favorable coverage and dispassionate, objective editorial regarding Muslims and Islam is not an entitlement in the real world of the free press. Such is usually accomplished through paid advertising. Journalistic integrity competes with ratings and circulation value, and responsible reporting from one perspective is unwarranted media bias from another. Such happens when people think for themselves. Thus, it stands to reason that negative portrayal and contemptuous commentary of Muslims, and Islam in western media is an inextricable certainty of the industry, particularly in light of global events. Although it frequently angers Muslims, and evokes protest and condemnation, it is unlikely to go away. Nevertheless, as Muslims our concern is legitimate and the matter requires attention. The question is what type of attention? Despite condemnation, various public relations overtures, civil rights actions and legal maneuvers, the anti-Muslim comment has not vanished. When will it end? How can we stop it? The truth is, there is no foreseeable end in sight, and if we continue to employ the same reactionary methods to change public opinion, or quell anti-Muslim statements, the problem will only exacerbate. Part of the conundrum is our reluctance to assume collective accountability for our condition. Another cause of the problem is conspicuous absence of Quranic and Prophetic guidance in our choice of tactics. Slander, ill treatment, and negative perception of Muslims are not simply public relation challenges requiring conventional image re-tooling. Or a mere civil rights dilemma remedied by protest and letters to the editor, and certainly not just a constitutional infraction requiring a Bill of Rights refresher course. There are numerous geo-political, theological, and socio-environmental factors which determine how Muslims living in the United States are spoken of, spoken to, and treated. Overstating the scale and breadth of ill sentiment toward Muslims in America is counter productive. Disregarding the root causes is irresponsible. Ignoring it completely is a missed opportunity. Expecting positive results while failing to employ an Islamic ethical approach is a fantasy existing only in the quilt of our minds woven together with the threads of wishful thinking. Ill sentiment and verbal attacks against Islam and some Muslims in the United States does occur. However, considering that there are about 5 million Muslims in America, the ratio of reported incidents of anti Muslim bias reported by CAIR is 40 out every 100,000, which is too low to warrant priority one status. Countering verbal disparagement with protest is a tactically flawed approach. In this year alone; there has been at least three major incidents (the cartoon satirizing our Prophet (SAWS), the Popes repeating a centuries old quotation, and the eight Imams who were unceremoniously escorted off an airplane) of verbal or public insult of Islam, the Prophet (SAWS) or Muslims. In each case there was protest, vociferous indignation, and demands for retraction or apologies. Yet, in each case, indignation yielded no measurable improvement of Muslim image or cessation of anti-Muslim bias or speech. Additionally, the principal sentiment fueling the response was anger. In all but the last incident, response resulted in the loss of innocent life. It is ironic that anger is the very emotion that warrants suppression according to the islamic ethical code. A greater irony is that in each case, media characterization of Muslim response was replete with words like, rage, fury, and anger. I personally do not recall any headlines that captioned; Muslims love for their Prophet caused them to or the love of Allah fuels protest, or, Muslim expresses their love for Islam by boycotting. Thus from a strategic perspective, response netted negligible dividend. To consider whatever dialogue that followed as tangible gain is a misleading since doctrinal polemics between Islam and other faiths have existed for over 1400 years. In the game of image politics, celebratory elation when a detractor agrees to your petition to dialogue is a sophisticated and sanitized form of humiliation. It messages a craving for legitimacy. The compulsive rush to defend criticism implies that there is truth in it. Islamic canonical law does not prescribe recrimination as a response to verbal affront which carry no judicial or legal consequence. Unflattering words are not repelled by the same; on the contrary, evil is only repelled by justice. Nor can goodness and Evil be equal. Repel (Evil) with what is better: Then will he between whom and thee was hatred become as it were thy friend and intimate! Ibn Abbaas said: Allah (God) summons the Muslim community to exercise patience when angry, benevolence in the face of ignorance, and pardon when offended. If people did that, Allah would protect them from the Devil . If countering verbal disparagement with protest and reciprocal assault is righteousness, then to do the opposite constitutes unrighteousness. Obviously, such a hypothesis contradicts Prophetic guidance. The example of the Prophet (SAWS) in responding to verbal disparagement against himself, His Lord, or Muslims was to exercise restraint. The dangerous theological implications of the protest approach seem to escape consideration. Understandably we are frustrated by the incessant degrading, slaughter, and humiliation of Muslims. However, although anger, insult and frustration are causes of moral infraction in Islamic law, they are unacceptable justifications for it. Otherwise, emotion would outrank divine injunction as the primary criterion of good conduct. Such a notion is heresy according to orthodox Muslim theology Prioritization of anti-Muslim bias as a premiere issue over Muslim intra-religious hostility and sectarianism transposes the divine contractual assignment of Islamic law. It creates a reverse moral assumptive whereas intra-religious sectarianism is an acceptable paradigm while anti Muslim bias is not. The latter is declared intolerable to the degree of public protest, indignant response, and central billing in Friday sermons, while the former warrants no such attention, although it ranks amongst the category of major sins in Islam. Stoicism in the face of verbal invective is virtue while the Muslim slander of Muslim is depravity and Muslim on Muslim killing approaches heresy. Slander of a Muslim is depravity and killing him is heresy. Therefore, by what moral rationale do we address anti-Muslim sentiment in the press, which by itself bears no spiritual penalty for Muslims if left unattended, and not devote similar attention to Muslim on Muslim killing and slander which register sin by occurrence, and sin when allowed to continue. Verily the believers are a single brotherhood therefore make peace between your brethren and fear Allah so ye may receive mercy . Since verbal disparagement against Muslims and Islam is an inevitable occurrence, Islamic spiritual etiquette emphasizes preparing in advance for its contingency and utilizing deflective buffering if and when it happens. Ye shall certainly be tried and tested in your possessions and in your personal selves; and ye shall certainly Hear much that will grieve you, from those who received the Book before you and from those who worship many gods. But if ye persevere patiently, and guard against evil,-then that will be a determining factor in all affairs! Hence, no shock or dismay should follow slanderous, negative, or degrading statements about Muslims especially in environments where we are religious minorities, such as the United States. As a rule Muslims should resist grieving over verbal insult, Let not their speech, then, grieve thee. Verily We know what they hide as well as what they disclose When verbal and media denigration occurs, there are scriptural analgesics that buffer and counteract psychological, emotional, or spiritual irritation. And have patience with what they say, and leave them with noble (dignity) . Dignified detachment rekindles spiritual fortitude and prioritizes inner jihad. Self control and spiritual focus does more to convey the noble attributes of Islamic teachings than hypersensitivity and angered reaction to disparagement. It brings forth divine assurance of blessing and guidance which in significantly more rewarding than emotional capitulation to antagonist sentiments. Those who, when afflicted with calamity say: “To Allah We belong, and to Him is our return. They are those on whom (Descend) blessings from God, and Mercy, and they are the ones that receive guidance. Blessings and mercy is better than anguish and consternation. Frenzied retort to anti-Muslim speech underscores the need for Muslim moral attentiveness, and bolsters the argument for reform. Not reform of Islam as suggested by many, but reform of the Muslim heart so that behavior response conforms to Islamic teachings and pleasing the Creator takes precedence over pleasing the created. If there is truth in the verbal invectives launched against us, then reminder is a timely utility since remembrance benefits the believer. If it is false, with no basis in truth, we praise Allah that we are free of it. Demanding that people not insult or speak ill of Muslims only bolsters animosity. It may occasionally silence the tongue, but it has little effect on the heart of the antagonist. Public criticism when muffled turns into whispers (waswasa) which though lower in decibel, is exponentially more insidious. Lets leave response to insult to Allah and concentrate on our own salvation. If good fortune comes to you, it grieves them; and if evil befalls you, they rejoice in it. But if you are patient in adversity and conscious of God, their guile cannot harm you at all: for, verily, Allah encompasses [with His might] all that they do. The sooner we do this, the better. Otherwise we will find ourselves inducted into a war of words in which entry itself assures moral casualty. Do You Know the Health Benefits of Garlic?

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

By Ashi Jas General Description Garlic belongs to the same family as the onion. Both these herbs have been given special importance in Ayurveda due to their immense curative properties. The first recorded incidence of garlic as a medicinal herb dates as back as 4500 B.C. when the pyramid builders in Egypt were made to eat garlic cloves everyday for building their health. It has also been recommended by Hippocrates, who is regarded as the Father of Medicine. Garlic is a biennial herb, but it is generally cultivated as an annual herb for convenience. Morphologically, it is a short herb with fibrous roots, a condensed stem and flattened leaves. The separate cloves of the garlic are enclosed together to form a single bulb. There could be anywhere between six and thirty-five cloves in one bulb of garlic. It is called as lahsuna in the Indian language and its binomial name is Allium sativum. It contains all the vitamins necessary in the human diet, such as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin (B complex vitamins) and ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Garlic contains minerals such as calcium, phosphorus and iron. It also contains iodine, sulfur and chlorine in trace amounts. Besides all these, garlic contains allicin, allisatin I and allisatin II, all of which have been identified to be agents helpful in bringing down high blood pressure. Properties Garlic is known for the following curative properties:- (i) Garlic contains antiseptic properties. Hence it is used in preventing infections. (ii) Garlic is hypotensive, i.e. it has capacity to bring down blood pressure. (iii) Garlic is a stimulant for appetite. (iv) Due to its rich vitamin and mineral content, garlic is very good for the hair. (v) Garlic increases the inner body strength and vitality. (vi) Garlic can reduce cholesterol accumulated in the arteries. That explains its widespread use in the treatment of heart problems. (vii) The strong juices of the garlic dissolve the mucus content in the respiratory tract. (viii) Garlic increases perspiration, which helps in the removal of the toxins from the sweat pores. (ix) Garlic is anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic in nature. (x) Garlic has notable aphrodisiacal properties. It is used in the treatment of many sexual problems. Uses Garlic is almost worshipped in Ayurvedic medicine since it is a single treatment for a wide variety of diseases. The following are the diseases in which garlic proves to be very beneficial. (i) Acne Garlic is used in the treatment of acne. If the pimples are rubbed with a cut clove of garlic several times a day, then they will disappear without leaving a scar behind. Garlic must also be included in the diet since it is a blood-purifier and can treat acne from within. (ii) Asthma Garlic is a sure remedy for asthma patients. Each night before retiring to bed, asthmatic patients must drink a glassful of milk in which three cloves of garlic have been boiled. Another remedy is very popular in making asthmatic attacks less severe. It is as follows: Peel a clove of garlic, crush it and boil it in 120 milliliters of pure malt vinegar. Cool it, then strain it and add an equal quantity of honey in it. Preserve this syrup in a clean bottle. Take one or two teaspoons of this syrup with a decoction of fenugreek twice each day, after darkness sets in. (iii) Digestive Problems Garlic is unanimously considered by all Ayurvedic doctors to be the best herb in the treatment of digestive problems. Daily consumption of garlic in the food helps in the proper movement of the intestines, which helps in digestion. Due to its antiseptic properties, garlic is also good remedy for preventing the inflammations of the gastric canal. Garlic aids in the treatment of colitis, dysentery and diarrhea. (xiii) Wounds Due to its antiseptic properties, garlic can be effectively used in the treatment of wounds and ulcers. A good antiseptic lotion can be prepared for washing wounds by dissolving one part of garlic juice in three parts of distilled water. When the wound is washed with this lotion, there is marked improvement in a very short time. This also relieves the pain that is associated with wounds due to damage to the nerves. Special Ayurvedic Preparations Mostly garlic is eaten raw, and is prescribed to be an integral part of the diet. Precautions Garlic is a component of the main Indian diet, and there are no problems associated with its intake. Up to six cloves of garlic can be taken per day without any side-effects. The only problem with garlic is that it gives a bad taste in the mouth and pungent breath due to its sulfur content.
