Doll House Scale and Building Materials

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

By Laura Anne Grey One of the most important things to know about the dollhouse hobby is that all dolls houses are built to standard scale. That is they are built to a certain size so furniture and decorations can universally be fitted into them. There are two standard scales for dolls houses: 1/12th scale and 1/24th scale. 1/12th scale is 12 times smaller that real size and 1/24th scale is 24 times smaller than real size. 1/12th scale is by far the most popular doll house scale and most furnishings and dolls houses are made to this scale. 1/24th scale is becoming more popular but there are far fewer furnishings available for this size doll house. If you are just starting out it is easier to stick to 12th scale. As well as being made to a standard scale doll houses are usually made out of one of two woods; MDF or plywood. Childrens houses tend to solely be made from MDF because it is very durable and doesnt splinter. Plywood is often used for collectors houses that have a lot of detail and intricate shapes. Plywood is much thinner than MDF and a plywood dolls house is far less durable and I would not recommend one for a child. It does have its advantages in collectors houses however. This wood is more malleable and can bend so you can choose a doll house with a curved roof and lots of fancy trims. If you are building a doll house from scratch yourself I would recommend using MDF. It is much easier to work with and will make a more stable doll house. You can also purchase standard sized windows and doors to fit a doll house made from 9mm thick MDF is you don’t want to make these yourself. Laura Anne Grey has been a doll house builder and miniature enthusiast for over ten years. She owns a doll house business in South Wales and is an expert in her field. Michael Jackson, Classic Marketing Blunders And Your Wallet!

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

By Dean Phillips You couldn’t help but be captivated by the unbelievably cute kid with the amazingly controlled falsetto voice and electric dance moves. He was only 10 years old, when he exploded onto the music scene, along with his brothers as the lead singer of the Jackson 5, but he had the stage presence of a twenty year veteran. Before or since, I haven’t seen a child that talented, that gifted, that dynamic, that charismatic! I’m talking about Michael Jackson, of course. The whole world fell in love with Michael Jackson! In the early seventies, Michael along with his brothers, the Jackson 5, were the hottest musical act on the planet! As an adult, he still had the magic that so captivated us when he was a child. And once again, he became the hottest musical act on the planet! In fact, if Michael hadn’t broken “a cardinal rule,”, there’s little question, he’d be considered the greatest entertainer of all time. So what “cardinal rule” did Michael Jackson break? He tried to reinvent the wheel. He took that handsome and familiar face that was loved by millions of people all around the world–and he destroyed it, along with his incredible career at the same time. Businesses do the same thing every single day. They destroy what’s familiar and successful. Instead of taking the path of least resistance, they try to reinvent the wheel–usually with disasterous results! Here’s a classic example of what I’m talking about: For over a century now, Coca-Cola has been the number one soft drink company in the world. They have vast financial resources and some of the greatest marketing minds available at their disposal. Despite all of that, Coca-Cola failed miserably when it introduced New Coke to the public back in 1985. Why? What happened? Well, there have been many theories floated over the years, as to why New Coke fizzled out. Like everyone else, I have my own theory. A very simple theory… People didn’t like New Coke. It’s as simple as that. Despite all the research that was done, and despite the thousands of taste tests conducted; the buying public just didn’t like the taste of New Coke. And absolutely nothing Coca-Cola said or did could change that one simple fact. Unfortunately, that turned out to be a very costly lesson for Coca-Cola. They lost millions of customers to their bitter rival and number two soft drink giant, Pepsi. They also took a bath financially. Yes, Coca-Cola is still the number one soft drink. But the gap has been narrowed significantly. Here’s another example: Burger King wanted desperately to be “French Fries King.” For years, the No. 2 hamburger chain beat out McDonald’s in taste tests of hamburgers, but the Golden Arches kept a lock on having the number one french fries. So, Burger King spent several years formulating a new french fry, a potato stick coated–unlike its predecessor–with a layer of starch designed to help retain heat and add crunch. Armed with a $70 million marketing war chest, the company rolled out its biggest product launch ever in 1998. So, what happened? Burger King’s new french fries turned out to be a whopper of a flop! “Sales of fries are significantly down,” stated a 1999 internal memo. “Double digit percent of consumers avoid Burger King because of our french fries.” Ouch! Fortunately, Coca-Cola and Burger King were able to survive near catastrophic miscalculations, because they had billions of dollars behind them. But other companies that badly miscalculate that don’t have those kind of financial resources, generally end up going out of business. That’s basically why so many dot-com companies are dropping like flies–and will continue to do so. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Instead, take the path of least resistance. Focus on what people are actually buying, and promote the daylights out of it, applying sound, proven advertising and marketing techniques. In closing, you’ll incur fewer risks and your wallet will be a lot fatter, if you just sell what people are buying! If They Would Only Do It My Way

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

By Pegine Echevarria You have the perfect plan, you know how it will play out, everyone has a role and the outcome is assured. Then one or all of the people, or the characters in your play, don’t follow your script and you don’t get what you want in the way you want it. This occurs all the time in families, offices, business deals, friendships and teams. You, the director, KNOW how it should go if only everyone would do it YOUR way. People use a variety of tactics to convince others to do things their way. Guilt, rewards, punishments, praise, begging, and so on. Everything works sometimes, and you convince yourself that you have ‘the power’ to have people follow your plan and your script, except when your actors don’t follow your plan, then the director (you) gets angry, frustrated, stressed, and lonely. Sometimes a director may tell himself that he isn’t good enough, that he doesn’t don’t know what he is doing, that he is a failure. He takes personal responsibility for the outcome by inflicting emotional pain on himself. Other times a director may blame everyone else. She may say that everyone else is the cause of the problem. She had nothing to do with it. She had the perfect plan. Her plan was the best and if only everyone followed her way than there wouldn’t be a problem. Sometimes you may be treated as the actor in someone else’s play. If you didn’t agree to be a participant you may find yourself feeling resentful, put upon, victimized, threatened, and rebellious. Your behavior may be passive aggressive (smiling on the outside but sabotaging the production with your attitude or actions). As leaders, managers, parents and team members it is important to realize that 1- everyone has a choice, 2- everyone has their own plan, 3- everyone is the director of their own perception of the world. The clash occurs when you expect everyone to follow your directions/orders/demands and they don’t see the benefits or rational behind it or the “what is in it for me” factor. We humans are self-centered, it is how we are. We have to decide to ‘think’ of others and not be so engrossed in our selves and our own affairs, easier said then done. How can we get out of our self-centeredness and be better managers, leaders and parents? This is what this article is all about. Quotes “When I get out of ‘me’ and find ‘we’ I become more successful” “The one important thing I have learned over the years is the difference between taking one’s work seriously and taking one’s self seriously. The first is imperative and the second is disastrous”. ~Margot Fonteyn Self-interest is the enemy of all true affection. ~ Franklin D. Roosevelt “It’s hard to follow God closely when your eyes are focused on everyone else around you.” ~Unknown “When an organism begins to become self-centered, taking only in regard to its own needs and ignoring those of its neighbor, we call it cancer.” ~Ra Bonawitz “Selfishness is not living as one wishes to live, it is asking others to live as one wishes to live.” ~Oscar Wilde Try-its: To eradicate ourselves of self centeredness we have to first accept what we are powerless over: 1. Write a list of at least 25 people, places, things and situations that you are powerless over. 2. Review your list 3. Let the people, places, things and situations go. If you belong to a religious group give your list to your God and let him handle the list for you. For instance, I have no control of the situation when my son drives his car. He is 19. I’m not in the car with him. I can’t navigate the road for him. I can’t push cars out of the way if someone gets distracted and sways into his lane. I’ve handed that situation to a higher being, I know others who have faith knowing that all is well and let it go. I do not have control over my clients. I’m not sitting in their offices 24/7 guiding their decisions. I’ve given all the information I can for them to make a decision. Ultimately it is their decision based on all the information that they know (and I don’t). I have to let it go. Kick-butt actions: Here are some questions to ask yourself when you find yourself trying to direct uncooperative people: How important is it REALLY to have the person do this task? What are the rewards and consequences for the person? (Be clear and communicate those) Can you, and more importantly, will you follow through on the rewards and consequences? If not, don’t talk about them. If you don t follow through you will sabotage yourself by losing credibility. Are there actions you want them to do OR do you want a specific outcome and the action doesn’t really matter. If friction arises be prepared to ask yourself: What role did you play in this? What was your responsibility? What can you do to make this situation right? Do you need to apologize for your self centeredness or human frailty? What will you do differently next time? Remember we are all just players (actors) in this theatre of life. As a director/leader your job is to: Inspire Educate Coach Correct Celebrate Speak specifically regarding expectations and accountably. If you do not have these conversations and chaos and friction will be the result. Taking control and being in control are two different sides of the same coin. One is the beginnings of leadership the other can lead to the illusion that you ARE in control of people, places things and situations. Ultimately you are only in control of your own actions, thoughts, behaviors. So are you a director creating chaos or a leader inspiring a team effort? The Problem with Autograph Authentication

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

By Adam McFarland As recently as 1997, the FBI estimated that between 50% and 90% of all collectibles in the marketplace are not authentic. Everyone that cares about the hobby agrees that something must be done. And most think that autograph authentication paying a third party company to certify that an autograph is real - is a logical solution that benefits everyone involved and eliminates counterfeiting. Last month, we featured a story by a small business owner (and friend of mine) who would strongly disagree with that statement. He sold a Michael Vick autographed mini helmet on eBay. The buyer sent it to be authenticated by PSA/DNA and, upon not receiving authentication, demanded a refund. My friend stood his ground and denied this request. In my opinion this was the right move the autograph is real and he cannot set the precedent of letting PSA/DNA dictate his sales. No business owner wants to have to make a decision that will result in an unsatisfied customer, but what was he supposed to do? Give the customer a refund on a perfectly good item because its another companys opinion that the item is fake? That would be even worse for his reputation than an unsatisfied customer! It seems that as collectors we have given authentication companies far too much control over the hobby. Autograph Authentication Kills Small Businesses Consider my friends business for a second either he himself or one of his associates obtains each and every autograph that he sells in person. He produces a certificate of authenticity that states the date and location of the signing. In todays industry, this simply isnt good enough. How is an entrepreneur who wants to form a legitimate autograph business supposed to start out? PSA/DNA is making it virtually impossible for these businesses to get their foot off the ground. When they do start to establish their business, one false positive can ruin their reputation. My friend will have no way of knowing how bad his name has been ruined by this customer who thinks he purchased a fake item. Autograph Authentication Gives PSA, Steiner Sports, and Upper Deck Too Much Control I certainly hope that it is not PSAs intention to crush small businesses, but the fact that they have the power to do so disturbs me a great deal. Everyone should realize that all PSA is doing is giving their OPINION as to the validity of the autograph. PSA states this on their website in the FAQ section http://www.psadna.com/faq.chtml: Q: Do you guarantee that the autographs you certify are genuine and those you do not are fake? A: No. We do not guarantee autographs under the Vintage Certified program. By using this program, you are paying for the opinion of the top experts in the world, using state-of-the-art examination tools and techniques. The problem with this is that most people dont treat it like an opinion. For one reason or another people are mislead to treat it like it is fact. And by doing this they give PSA power that they shouldnt have. Their findings are treated as definitive if PSA says its real then it is real. If PSA says its fake then it is fake. It behooves them as a business to scare consumers into believing in their service. We have to ask ourselves the question: is this good for our hobby? Autograph Authentication Means Higher Prices for Collectors Along the same lines, exclusive autograph companies like Steiner Sports and Upper Deck benefit by scaring collectors. By making collectors think that everything that is not exclusive to them is not real, collectors are scared into paying outrageously high prices for their memorabilia and taught that anything reasonably priced is fake. This is just simply not true. So What Should You Do? My Recommendation get your autographs yourself. It will give you the most satisfaction and there will never be a question of authenticity. However, if you must purchase an autograph, research the signature you are looking for, research the company you are buying from, and find a seller that you trust is selling you something authentic. If in doing this you decide to pay PSA/DNA for their opinion, keep in mind that is what you are getting - an opinion. Dieting Chart After Gastric Bypass Surgery

Monday, April 14th, 2008

By Tammy Joely When you get your gastric bypass surgery you will have a new stomach that only holds about three tablespoons of food at a time. You will gradually stretch you stomach so that it holds a cup to a cup and a half of food when you eat. Initially though your stomach will be very small and it will be easily upset. This is why you absolutely need to go on a special diet starting from the moment you wake up after surgery. You start off with liquids while in the hospital. These will be clear liquids like broth, Jell-O, juice and water. Believe me you may be thinking now that this is not appetizing or filling, but when you wake up you will feel differently. You will also be very thirsty and ice will do wonders for your pains If this goes well you can move up to something called full liquids. These are your breakfast shakes or weight watchers drinks. They have lots of protein which your body needs at this time. You should also start taking chewable vitamins as well to supplement your diet. When youve been on full liquids for about two weeks you can start on a soft diet of pureed and easy to chew foods. This can include blenderized meats, baby food, and soft cheeses. You can make up lots of pureed soups to eat during this time. It is important to make sure that you chew everything very thoroughly or that its already a blenderized consistency after the gastric bypass. After all of this from your gastric bypass you finally get to return to solid foods at about eight weeks. You can eat your five food groups but make sure to start off with protein with each meal. Also to make sure that you dont fill up too fast or digest too quickly youll be instructed to drink your liquids in between your meals. The Christian Sabbath

Friday, April 11th, 2008

By Debra Lohrere God sanctified the seventh day Sabbath as a day in remembrance that He is the Creator of Heaven and Earth. The Bible says, Exodus 20:8-11 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work. So if God ordained Sunset Friday to Sunset Saturday, the seventh day as the Sabbath, why do most Christians go to Church on Sunday? Who changed the day to Sunday, and when? Did Jesus? Is it spoken of in the scriptures? Was there a new commandment written to amend the fourth commandment after Jesus died? Do we keep Sunday in honor of his resurrection? It has been firmly established by numerous historians and theologians that the books of Matthew and Luke were written between 60 and 80 AD. This means that if the Sabbath had changed to Sunday after Jesus death, then it should have been recorded by these Bible writers. Instead though we see that rather than inform us of any change to the day, Luke instead he states in Luke 23:56, And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment. Jesus Himself in His prophecy about the destruction of the temple, which occurred in about 70 AD, when He was talking to His Disciples said Matthew 24:20, And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. This shows conclusively that Jesus knew that the Sabbath would still be in existence many years after the cross. Historians also confirm that the seventh day Sabbath was kept by both Jews and Gentiles, until around 120 AD. At this time the persecution of the Jews became so great that many Christians in some areas decided to start keeping Sunday, so as to try to differentiate themselves from the Jews, who were still faithfully keeping the Sabbath of the Lord. Some Christians began to use the excuse that it was in honor of the resurrection, as there was no scriptural basis for this change. At that time Christians in areas outside the Roman empire continued to keep the true seventh day Sabbath of God. In 321 A.D. Constantine, who was a pagan, became Caesar in Rome. As he began to see the balance of power shift from paganism to the Church he passed the first law enforcing Sunday worship in 321 AD. Sunday of course was the day that the pagans kept holy in their worship of the Sun god. Two years after passing this law Constantine joined the Roman Catholic Church and began mingling paganism with Christianity. The pagans were very involved with idolatry, so he took many of the statues of their gods and gave them Christian names, like St Peter and Mary. It was well after 400 AD before Sunday eventually took on the name of the Lords Day. In many documents, papers and books written by the Roman Catholic Church, they openly take credit for moving the sanctity of the Seventh day Sabbath to Sunday, by their own authority, which they believe is above that of the scriptures. Here are some examples. “Protestants…accept Sunday rather than Saturday as the day for public worship after the Catholic Church made the change…But the Protestant mind does not seem to realize that…In observing the Sunday, they are accepting the authority of the spokesman for the church, the Pope.” Our Sunday Visitor , February 15, 1950. “From this we may understand how great is the authority of the church in interpreting or explaining to us the commandments of God - an authority which is acknowledged by the universal practice of the whole Christian world, even of those sects which profess to take the holy Scriptures as their sole rule of faith, since they observe as the day of rest not the seventh day of the week demanded by the Bible, but the first day. Which we know is to be kept holy, only from the tradition and teaching of the Catholic church.” Henry Gibson, Catechism Made Easy, # 2, 9th edition, vol. 1, p. 341-342. “It was the Catholic church which…has transferred this rest to Sunday in remembrance of the resurrection of our Lord. Therefore the observance of Sunday by the Protestants is an homage they pay, in spite of themselves, to the authority of the (Catholic) church.” Monsignor Louis Segur, Plain Talk About the Protestantism of Today, p. 213. “Sunday is our mark or authority…the church is above the Bible, and this transference of Sabbath observance is proof of that fact.” Catholic Record of London , Ontario, September 1, 1923. The authority of the church could therefore not be bound to the authority of the Scriptures, because the Church had changed…the Sabbath into Sunday, not by command of Christ, but by its own authority. Canon and Tradition, p. 263. So it seems that if Christians keep the Sabbath on the seventh day, we are following the commandment of God, but if we keep Sunday, we are following the traditions of man. Does that really matter? The Bible says in Mark 7:6-9 Jesus answered them, How right Isaiah was when he prophesied about you! You are hypocrites, just as he wrote: These people, says God, honor me with their words, but their heart is really far away from me. It is no use for them to worship me, because they teach human rules as though they were my laws! You put aside God’s command and obey human teachings. And Jesus continued, You have a clever way of rejecting God’s law in order to uphold your own teaching. It seems clear that Jesus wanted us to stand firm on the teachings of the scriptures, and not on any religious traditions instituted by man. All Bible references are from the King James Version. Motivation: The Real Instrument to Losing Weight

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

By Dennis Biray To start of frankly, if you are overweight and know about the concerns that the spreading epidemic creates but refuse to act upon the problem I must contribute my voice of disapproval. Candidly, you may argue that you have tried commercialized diets and protein shakes eagerly awaiting miracle results, but the truth is that 90% of the time these advertised diets that you so preciously engage in are short-lived, not because they do not work but because of the lack of willpower and motivation to continue these diets for an extended period of time. That right there is the key to becoming healthier, and along with a small sense of patience anyone can lose weight regardless the situation. Now touching back on the premise of advertised diets, the truth is that most of these diets do help individuals shed some pounds in a slightly rapid manner. However, the problem concerning this area is the continuation and lack of exercise these diets involve. Rarely do you see individuals continue these diets for at best a few months because of the static routine of eating the same kind of food everyday becomes tiresome. And unfortunately since these individuals disregard exercise in most cases, and apply their full concentration to what they put in their mouth, when they feel the diet is complete they often regain extra weight quicker than originally lost. If the individual is able to sustain his or her connection with the marketed diet, then I applaud these individuals with many accolades, not because they used a specific diet prescribed to them, but because they had the motivation and willpower to do so. While you may argue that there must be a better and healthier way to garner some of this respect, I admit there is but only originating from the same emotional response. If you feel that you are not able to achieve this emotional response by utilizing such ideals that you are dissent from achieving a look or it does not fit your personality, the best advice I can give it to take off your clothes and stand in front of your mirror. Take a few moments and reflect on how you look and what you want to look like, thinking about all the missed opportunities and health troubles you could of avoided if only you took the proper steps to correct this misfortunate you have accumulated over your life. After possibly having an immediate sense of depression or anxiety after looking at yourself naked, you should have a followed reaction of a desire to do something about your situation. If you cannot behave or feel in such a manner, then I advise that you stop reading this article right now because I can no longer help you if you do not want to help yourself. If you do now contain this sense of adrenaline of wanting to prove to yourself that you can help your body, the most important step now is to retain this vibrancy throughout your dieting. Now unfortunately other events will come up during the next few stages altering your mood in some cases in a dramatic manner which is understandable, but to revive this feeling that you should have, the best option is to reread this paragraph again and follow the steps to ensure your motivation lingers. You may now be asking yourself if the process has been successful, and while I cannot comment on every person who has lost weight, the practice has worked successfully for me as I have lost near 35 pounds in close to four months. Along with having this wanton motivation to help my body, the next step comes in the form of my diet. Water and one of milk, tea, or coffee should be your only source of liquid where water should be taken in the form of eight to 10 cups a day. Breakfast is also very important as it starts your metabolism early; the scientific way of losing weight. Suggestions for food include protein based substances such as a peanut butter sandwich (wheat bread), milk, yogurt, or vitamin filled cereal. Your lunch can range from a sandwich with wheat bread, cheese, and turkey, to soup or salad depending on your preference. Dinner can vary, but I suggest having one meat (chicken, egg, turkey, or beef), one side of vegetables, and one side of pasta (wheat noodles, or spaghetti). For desert I also recommend a piece of fruit such as an apple or orange to fix that craving you might have. That piece of fruit should also be used as a snack during the course of the day between breakfast and lunch and lunch and dinner as eating that apple will not only appease your hunger but help your metabolism in the process. However, I do not recommend eating more than a serving of fruit or other healthy substitutes during these in between periods. Sweets and sugars such as ice cream, candy bars, cakes, pies, and potato chips should be 99% out of your diet at all costs. While maybe every month or so you can enjoy a slice of cake at a friends birthday party, I do not recommend anything more as you are defeating the whole purpose of making yourself healthier. In terms of complementing the diet with exercise I suggest following my plan. While everyones schedule is different I would argue that all of these activities should be squeezed in everyday as they take up no more than 45 minutes. In the morning I would take a galloon of water and start lifting it from my sides to the top of my head 105 times for each hand in sets of 35. While the process may seem tedious, the results are amazing as you not only increase your muscle mass but increase your metabolism by sustaining the new muscle. During the afternoon after work or school I would then spend 25 minutes jogging at a constant pace nonstop. While to beginners like the process of lifting the galloons of water 105 times, you might need to start slower such as walking half the time instead of the full 100% jog. The process is fine and you should be able to increase your percentage of jogging after a little while but be sure to do it at least for 25 minutes. After this I would immediately get on the floor and do 40 pushups, 100 sit-ups, and 80 curl ups in sequential order. While the numbers will start at the small side near the beginning, by constantly putting your body through the motions everyday, you should eventually reach my numbers and probably surpass them by losing weight in the process and making this whole experience worthwhile. Sound easy? It may, but also consider that you are reading this and have not experienced the obstacles that may hinder your chance at success. You may suddenly feel the urge to eat that donut your co-worker offered you, or decide to skip a day of exercise. Dont. If you feel any hesitation about completing the program take off your clothes, stand in front of that mirror, and regain your original optimism and sagacity. You may consider that the process is too grueling and harder than anything you have ever done, but think about all your other experiences unrelated to losing weight. You had a hard time to find a job, buy a house, finance your purchases, and thus, losing weight should be simple juxtaposed to these adventures if you reflect upon these or similar difficulties. The method may be hard at the beginning but that is only because the process is new and takes time to adjust just like any new experience, and soon it will become routine and you will want to take that 25 minute job or eat your broccoli because it seems so natural rather than an annoyance. However, none this will come unless you truly believe in your abilities and have the motivation and desire, the key component, to make your life healthier. How To Control Oily Skin - Part 1

Monday, April 7th, 2008

By Louise Forrest Try applying baby powder with cornstarch to your oily facial zones. The powder helps keep your face looking fresh all day if you apply it after your foundation and before your normal powder. Name brand is not important, just that you get the kind with cornstarch in it. Remember to use moisturizer after cleansing if yoBaking Soda, you can add a tablespoon of baking soda to your favorite mild cleanser (full bottle). It will provide gentle exfoliation and kill bacteria at the same time. Cornstarch; use cornstarch brushed with a light hand and a large powder brush before you apply your normal powder. Gatorade; apply Gatorade to your face with a cotton ball, rinse when you feel tingling. Hand Soap; use a very mild antibacterial soap on your face every once in a while. The milk and honey types offer a bit of moisturizer while cleaning, but you will still need to moisturize with a good moisturizer for oily skin. Honey; this is a natural moisturizers and antibacterial agent which cleans while it softens. Apply a tablespoon to your face and let it sit for 10 minutes. Rinse well with warm water. This can be used as often as necessary. Lemon; Squeeze a fresh lemon and apply the juice with a cotton ball; let it sit for 3 minutes before cleansing but do not leave it on your skin any longer than that. If your skin gets irritated, try mixing it with witch hazel in a 50/50 solution. Moisturize; because lack of moisture tends to make your oil glands work overtime, do not bypass the moisturizer. It is always tempting to leave the moisturizer out when you have oily skin because adding moisture to a face that is already over producing oil does not seem logical, but do not give in to the temptation. Apply your moisturizer to a damp face and it will help seal in much needed moisture, which can help your oil glands begin to regulate themselves. Oil Absorbing Sheets; found in local drug and discount stores can help you tone down the shine that begins to show in the middle of your day. They are good for use with makeup because they tone down the shine without removing makeup. Oily skin can be an aggravating part of your life, but if you care for it, it will care for you. People with oily skin tend to show age more slowly and burn less then their dry skinned counterparts. Using the following tips compiled from real people who face the dilemma of successfully controlling oily skin, you will be able to find ones that work for you. Sandalwood; just mix enough witch hazel with sandalwood powder to make a paste. Apply to your face and let sit for 10 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Steam; open your pores before cleansing once or twice a week. There are two ways you can do this. First (and best) is to boil a pot of water; once it begins to boil, take it off the heat (and away from the stove). Lean over the pot with a towel over your head, creating a tent over your head and the pot. BE CAREFUL NOT TO BURN YOURSELF. The steam will be trapped by the towel, allowing your face to get a mini sauna which will open the pores. Immediately cleanse with a mild cleanser and follow with a good moisturizer for oily skin. Tea Tree Oil; apply this natural oil to your skin at night and remember to drink plenty of water. The combination will clear your face quickly. Triggers; learn to recognize the various internal and external things that cause your oil glands to kick up the juice. Stress is often a factor as well as many environmental factors. Once you know which things trigger your oil glands to over-produce, you can work to avoid them. Water; drink your 8 glasses a day! Water helps clear the toxins trapped in the skin as well as providing internal moisture to it. When your skin is hydrated, it does not need to try to compensate for dryness. This does not mean that you will never have oily skin, but it will gradually become much more balanced. Louise Forrest has created the ultimate FREE Health & Beauty guide. Wild Flowers

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

By Alison Cole Wild flowers are Natures miracle of miracles. They bring color, perfume, and distinction to the diverse environments in which they grow. Wildflowers, however, can be as ecologically devastating as they are beautiful. Some wildflowers are native to the countries in which they are found. Others are migratory transplants, introduced either accidentally or purposefully into new landscapes. Wildflowers are often ecological opportunists, capable of proliferating in a wide variety of environments, sometimes at the expense of less-hardy indigenous plant species. The rate of multiplication of wildflowers is affected by the latitude, soil composition, heat, and moisture of their environments. Even sunburnt plots and gravelly highways can be home to these rugged species. There are perennial, biennial, and season wildflower species. They come in shades of green, purple, pink, red, blue, yellow, orange, lavender and white. Always a treat to the eye, some are carnivorous insect eaters while others are poisonous to livestock. Wild flower juices have been used for a variety of medicinal purposes by Native Americans, gypsies, and Australian aborigines. Fever, bronchitis, enlarged livers, ulcers, intestinal worms, allergies, cramps have traditionally been fought with wild flowers. To this day, science seeks to unravel their many closely held secrets that might help us fight cancer, high blood pressure, asthma, and arthritis. Wildflowers have also been made into dyes, insect repellants, sunburn ointments, and cooking accoutrements. Cooked as greens, brewed as substitutes for tea/coffee, or consumed as jams, jellies, syrups, or wines–wild flower varieties cover the gamut. Naturalists, scientists, doctors, gardeners or besotted flower enthusiasts . . . wildflowers have them all enthralled! Flowers provides detailed information about flowers, flower gifts, flower delivery, floral arrangements and more. Flowers is the sister site of Silk Wedding Flowers.
